Barton Fayre 1999
The entire length of Barton Street Gloucester was closed to traffic for the day to allow the people of Gloucester city to enjoy this marvellous event, the 534th Barton Fayre. Stalls, rides and side-shows ran along the sides of the road to tempt the crowd into spending a little money in the district. The Fayre was opened by Richard O Brien of Crystal maze fame
There were bands, street entertainers, Morris men, ethnic food, side shows, rides and of course after the inauguration of the Mayor the parade from Barton street toEastgate Street by the Guild Hall.
The new mayor was announced by our town crier, Alan Myatt with a fan fare from the band. This was a well known tune to anyone who has attended a rugby match in Gloucester…..
Why was he born so beautiful
( Why was he born at all )
Naturally, great play was made of the traditional one fingered salute mad with the cry of ” Up Yours ). If the visitor to these pages think that we don’t take ourselves totally seriously, they are quite right. The accent on Barton Fayre is fun for all the family.
After the speeches ( kept short by the band breaking in with the fan fare ) the new mayor,Hagit Gill was led in procession from the New Olympus Theatre to the Guild Hall in Eastgate street to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of Gloucester on the 1938 Leyland Metz fire engine on loan from the folk museum
t the Guild Hall a team of lady Morris dancers, England’s Glory, delighted the crowd while the dignitaries gathered
The Mayor was joined by the Mayor of Lydney and presented with onions from the traditional onion fayre held there this week
