Westgate St, Gloucester, United Kingdom 0.02 mi

have created this site because I think that St Nicholas Church is a remarkable and interesting building in many respects.

Also I don’t believe that nearly enough is being done to promote this unique building to tourists. Italy has the Leaning Tower of Pisa; England has the Leaning Church of Gloucester. It is just as startling to stand inside it and see those huge pillars and other features leaning in different directions, wondering at the challenges that faced the builders. There is such a surge in interest in the mechanics behind history that I think tours would be popular, highlighting, as far as we know, the actual construction methods when all those huge stones were moved onto the site by animal power, all scaffolding was wooden poles and masons used tools we wouldn’t give shed-space to (or would we?). The human effort (and cost) is mind boggling to us! Even the completion of Gaudi’s extraordinary unfinished Cathedral, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is being carried out by pouring concrete into moulds, applying the mosaic inner face, and then offering up the complete sections into position. Carving real stone (as his masons did) is too expensive! Anyway, not the subject for this website!

Although it became redundant in 1975, St Nicholas is still consecrated and occasionally hosts special church services

We welcome you to the official website of Beatrix Potter’s The Tailor of Gloucester museum and shop.

The House of the Tailor of Gloucester (pictured here) is today a charming museum and quaint shop. The building is easy to find. It is in College Court which stands within the shadow of the Cathedral. This was the area Beatrix Potter drew and which inspired her to write what she described as her ‘favourite book’.

The House of the Tailor is now staffed by volunteers who are both enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Beatrix Potter and her works. The museum and shop are open to the public daily from Monday – Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday noon until 4pm (Closed Bank Holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Open Sunday from Easter until Christmas.).

Our misson is to protect and enhance Gloucestershire’s countryside. Unlike many environmental charities, CPRE has no vested interests – we own no land, rely solely on donations and grants, and are politically independent.  We are possibly the only green group which has a completely holistic approach. Planning, in particular, is all about looking at the bigger picture, and our wide remit means we have to consider the whole of the country – rural and urban – when creating policy.   Gloucestershire Branch has set out a vision for the countyside in 2026, drawn from CPRE’s national vision.

Blackfriars is one of the most complete Dominican priories to survive from the Middle Ages in England. The mendicant orders, established themselves across Europe in the early 13th century. They were particularly engaged with preaching and charitable work with the laity.

The Dominicans, or Blackfriars, first came to Gloucester in 1239 at the instigation of Sir Stephen de Hermshall. The building of the house began almost immediately, largely with materials and funds donated by Henry III, and was completed in about 1270 as home for some forty friars.

We teach authentic Argentine Tango in the Guildhall Gloucester each Wednesday at 2030.

It is a fairly lighthearted set up with a focus on supporting learning, having fun and developing good core Argentine Tango technique. There is a licensed bar / café in the Guildhall where we often meet from around 8pm before heading to the dancefloor in the Fisher room at 8:30pm.

Parking: Usually it is best to park on the very top floor of the Kings Walk multistory – just go up, up, up til you get to the top. There is then a door in the wall – lit, then you can go down the lift to buy a ticket before reaching the main Guidhall where the lessons take place.

“Near Gloucester’s famous Cross of high street stores, you can take a break from your shopping spree with some therapy of a different kind at Tiger’s Eye. The restaurant resides in the iconic 17th-Century Old Bell Inn which, along with a stunning Victorian timepiece above the jewellers next door, is so eye-catching that it takes centre stage on the city’s busiest thoroughfare.

Don’t be deceived by the low-key signage on the street, for up in the first-floor cocktail, vodka and sake bar you are in for a jaw-dropping treat – a mysterious, dark oak-panelled room with a magnificent Jacobean carved stone fireplace. It really is a treasure of a bar, offering aperitifs from an eclectic range. Like time travellers, cross from this 1600s room into a new world of Pan Asian fusion cuisine, where a young, inventive team bring inspiration from their far-flung travels right to your table. Noodles, stir-fries, salads and more are simply and freshly prepared with top-quality ingredients, including halloumi and tofu options for vegetarians.

About us
Roots is a coffee shop and community space for Kingsholm, Gloucester.

We’re in the old co-operative building on Alvin St – across the road from the doctors’ surgery, around the corner from the rugby stadium and a stone’s throw from Kingsholm primary school. We love being at the heart of the community – because we love Kingsholm! That’s why we’re here.

Roots was started by a group of friends from the local area with a passion for seeing Kingsholm flourish. We’re inspired by the words and actions of Jesus Christ. That means putting people first – so we hope you’ll feel valued, welcomed and right at home.

The Whitesmiths Arms is named after metalworkers from the historic Gloucester Docks, which stand right opposite the pub. The area is now home to the National Waterways Museum and other attractions and there could be few better ways to round off a day out than to drop in for a drink or a bite to eat at this special pub.

You don’t have to take our word for it because it proudly takes its place in The Good Beer Guide, which praises the sensitive extension that has incorporated the medieval building next door. Arkell’s have owned the pub since 1991 and carried out the expensive and delicate refurbishment very recently within strict architectural guidelines.

The Whitesmiths now has one big, round bar where food is served at lunchtimes and in the evenings. The emphasis here is on good value fare with a wide-ranging menu, so it is well worth a visit at lunchtime as well as in the evening. If it is warm, you can also take advantage of the small beer garden.

Whatever the weather, there is no doubt that The Whitesmiths is one of those pubs with its own individual atmosphere – and real character to spare.

This July, Strike A Light and Gloucester Guildhall are partnering with the Roundhouse, Gloucester Culture Trust and The Music Works to transform the rooftops of King’s Walk multi-storey and Eastgate Centre carparks into a summer festival of theatre, music and performance.

Together we’ve joined forces with artists across the country to bring the perfect collision of classical music, hip hop, R’n’B, pop, rap, rock and spoken word to Gloucester.

Combined with a rooftop bar and tasty grub, we welcome you to park up and while away your long summer evenings with us.

The Gloucester Rooftop marks the first collaboration with the Roundhouse for the Gloucester-Roundhouse Exchange.

From Thurs 12th Jul – Saturday 21st Jul 2018

he Gloucester National Spiritualist Church was founded in April 1954, there had been a spiritualist church in Gloucester for many years prior to this date, the Services were held in a rented room in Russell Street. It moved to Montpellier where some people wanted to terminate the affiliation with the National Spiritualist Union and some didn’t. The group split up and thats when the Gloucester National Spiritualist Church was started in a basement room.
On the 12th May 1954 it was decided to start an open circle on Friday 16th April and from that day the Good Friday Circle has been held every year as the anniversary of that occasion.
On Sunday 14th June 1959 a special meeting was held to inform the committee that a piece of land with a meeting room had been offered for sale. This is the land that the Church is now on.
The new Church was opened on Saturday 31st March 1962.

The Hardwicke Players were formed in November 2004 by friends Claire Chapman, Steve Mills, Richard Edwards, Chris Sellars and Chris Paterson.

‘For the community, by the community’.

The group’s aim is two-fold: to perform original productions for the local community and at the same time, raise money for Gloucestershire charities.

The Hardwicke Players performed for the very first time at Quedgeley Village Hall in January 2006 when they took to the stage with their New Year pantomime, The Merchants of Gloucester, for which the group raised £900 for the Gloucester & District Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society.

We have since gone from strength to strength, and to date, have raised over £3,000 for local charities. We now perform twice a year, an annual January pantomime and a summer comedy show and the group have been delighted to find a new home at the Kings Theatre in Gloucester.

My name is Mike King and have lived all my life in Gloucestershire. I am happiest birding around  Frampton but I especially love Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. I have birded all over Europe, in the U.S.A. and Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico, The Gambia, Cape Verde and most recently Dominican Republic. I hope you will find this site interesting. It includes County news, sites to visit, trip reports and other information about birds in Gloucestershire and beyond. This site has now been running since August 2000, thanks to all my regulars and anyone else who has been kind enough to visit these pages. Please call back from time to time to see the new developments and of course, it will still be updated most days. You can e-mail me at any time at Mike@surfbirder.com with your thoughts, comments or contributions. Gloucestershire is one of the best counties to see many special birds.

Who am I?  Interesting question, when you work it out, please let me know.

At home, I’m husband to Amanda and father to Eloise, Holly and Leo.  We live in Gloucester, though not originally from anywhere near here but have made lots of  friends and it now very much feels like home.  I grew up in the seaside town of Silloth, then after finishing my Education, I moved to Worcester to live with Amanda and then we moved to Gloucester.

At work, I am the Managing Director of K Sharp, a Human Factors and Systems Engineering Consultancy.  Previous to this I worked for BAE Systems as a Human Factors Scientist, this is my 3rd “career” as I started in the Army, went on to be a software engineer and have got to where I am now.

I am a real fan of community activity and volentary work, having set up or helped set up a number of groups and clubs, and getting involved in a number of others.  Some of these include Kingsway Residents Association, Copeland Park Residents Group, Malvern Angels Rugby Club,

I am a County Councillor in Gloucestershire, and have been a Parish Councillor for Quedgeley.  I am a signed up, card carrying member of the Labour Party.  I have a passion for getting involved where I can, this is because I believe that rather than just moaning that something is wrong, I prefer to get stuck in.

This site contains my own opinion and that of the comment contributors.  My comments are NOT those of the Justice system, Magistrates, any local Government system, any employer (Past or Present) or the Labour party – my comments are my own.

The Hollie Gazzard Trust was set up following the death of Hollie while at work at Fringe Benefits & La Bella Beauty Salon, Gloucester. Hollie’s family wanted something positive to come out of the tragic loss of Hollie. Hollie’s passion was hairdressing and her family wanted to give others the opportunity that Hollie was fortunate to have and fulfill a career in hairdressing. Application was made to the charity commission and on 25 April 2014, the Hollie Gazzard Trust, a Charitable Incorporated Organization (CIO) was created. While the family are devastated and can’t change what has happened to Hollie, they hope the funds raised will help others.

Gloucester Local History Society is a relatively new group bringing together everyone with an interest in the history of Gloucester.  It was formed in 2012 under the chairmanship of Jerry Jenkinson who had previously spent over 20 years researching the history of this fascinating area.  His papers now form the basis of the Society’s archive (available to browse at each meeting).

So, if you too have an interest in your local history please get in touch and help keep the past alive in the present.  All meetings take place at the Ed. Shed (entrance via Quay Street, through the wooden gates), on the first Tuesday of alternate months (2015-16 season), at 7pm (note new time).

Gloucester Canoe Club (GCC) was formed by a group of enthusiastic canoeists who wanted to offer the sport out to others. This is still the same and paddlers of all ability and experience will always be welcome. We pride ourselves on being a social and friendly club, keeping as much informality as possible, whilst maintaining sufficient structure and organisation to participate in the sport safely.

When do we meet?

The club meet generally on the first and third Tuesday evenings between March and October at our boat store. Members are there between 6 and 6.30 hatching plans for the evenings paddling and entertainment. The first Tuesday of every month is training night where experienced paddlers will be on hand to help you with all aspects of your paddling, you ask and we can sort it out. We also offer sessions on local rivers on a number of Friday evenings from April through October and try to organise tours covering a range of interests and activities.  River sessions could be up or down stream ‘trips’ but also be based around skills development on moving water.

Some of the then musicians of England’s Glory Ladies Morris  were asked to play for a couple of ceilidhs in 1992 and 1993, enjoyed the experience, and more importantly, were enjoyed by their audiences, so formed the band and began playing out regularly together from 1994.

Nowadays we are one of the busiest bands on the local circuit, playing for barn dances and ceilidhs all over Gloucestershire, and the surrounding counties. We recently played for  our 260th dance together!

We work with a number of very experienced callers, who explain the dances, and have proved excellent at getting people up and dancing! They include Gerald Tween, a longstanding member of Lassington Oak Morris Men, and Karen Burridge, and Fiona Jarvis, former dancers with England’s Glory Ladies.

Most of the tunes we play are traditional English country dance tunes, including quite a few from the ‘Thomas Hardy’ song book, with a few Irish and Scottish tunes added.

The Blues Anoraks, Gloucester Blues Duo, were formed following a number of successful blues jamming sessions in 2002. These were held at a number of pubs and clubs across Gloucester. The sound of the Blues Anoraks is based on the live interaction between the full on, blues harp and vocal sound of  Mr Bill Pullin, and the syncopated,’chugging guitar riffs’ and supporting vocals of ( Dr ) Dave Camp including the Dr’s lead vocals on a number of high energy boogies. There are always plenty of harp solos and the sound is totally live.

CSS PLAY is a partnership between myself and my wife. My name is Stuart Nicholls, but known to everyone as just Stu. I am 68 years old, married with two children, worked as an electronics design draughtsman, until I resigned to become a self employed (freelance) web designer/adviser, and have a passion for computers and photography.

My wife is Fran Nicholls who assists in the day to day running of the site and also controls the accounts as well as having an input into the demonstrations.

We started out with computers in the 1980s when I began writing articles on the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum for the computer magazines of the time. I was also commissioned by McGraw-Hill to write two books on Z80 programming for the ZX Spectrum, Fran helped to produce the manuscripts for these books.

Based in a small village deep in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside, the dee-jaying days finally came to an end after nearly 37 very good years. The memories remain and so does all the Vinyl records – nearly  24,000 titles  at the last count containing all the categories, and artists you would associate with years gone by. So, with the turntables well and truly hung up for good, and the Vinyl Records stored away, now comes the time to let go all those quality tunes that have served so well over the dee-jaying period. So this is when I decided to set up this website and hopefully give many other people the chance to enjoy and get as much pleasure as I have from the Vinyl collection and to buy from my vast collection of  Vinyl  records.
A collection that contains all the types of music you would expect to find, from the  Rock ‘n’ Roll  years to the swinging  60s, when pop music dominated the air waves on those now infamous pirate radio stations, the introduction of what was then new sound from the States – the  Motown  sound what a voyage that turned out to be. Then the  Glam Rock  era at the start of the  70s , and the disco boom to the  Mod & Ska  revival taking us into the electronic 80s & the dance scene then on to those rave parties throughout the  90s  to what we now call Brit Pop,Old Skool, and so it goes on.There are many  Vinyl 7″,10″,12″,Picture Discs,Albums,& White Label  rarities to be re-discovered, and plenty of long lost gems just waiting to get re-born in the 21st Century.
As well as buying from our web site you can also pay over telephone, just ring through your order and instant payment can be made if you prefer not to go through the other options provided on the site maybe you prefer a move personal approach.

The Gloucester Gang Show is an annual Scouting Variety Show presented by Scouts and Guides of the Gloucester District. We have been going strong for over half a century now, and we continue to bring fantastic performances to you, year on year ensuring that we will be around to see 100 years in Gloucester!

The show aims to give young people an experience of all aspects of performance, from song and dance to comedy and tragedy. This process has proven to be exceptional at helping young people to develop their confidence, self-belief, inter-personal relationships, social skills, commitment and sense of community, not to mention their performance skills. We believe that programmes like this are of great benefit to young people, and of course also to the many adults we still have riding the Crest of a Wave.

The inspiration for Gang Shows comes from a man called Ralph Reader. He wrote, produced and directed the first Gang Show in London in 1932. At that time Ralph Reader was one of the most sought after of all professional choreographers, yet he undertook to mix his professional and amateur activities. The decision, to put on a production to raise funds, was a move which would affect his career and change his life forever.

The RAF Gang Shows, as they came to be known, grew to 25 different units consisting of RAF recruits considered unsuitable for combat duties. Many of these unknowns – Peter Sellers, Dick Emery, Tony Hancock, Norie Paramor – went on to become well-known entertainers.

The RAF Gang Shows played all over the world – wherever the troops went, the Gang Show’s followed.

The Freemen and Women of the City is looked after and run by a Committee of 15 Freemen and 1 Freewoman, with four main roles of President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary and Treasurer. The rest of the Committee including our Website Administrator is there to support the four main roles.

We have put together some questions and answers below which are frequently asked us. We hope that these help you and we would like to meet you when we join the Mayor, City Councillors and other Organisations on the Gloucester Festival Day in September.

Q. WHAT ARE FREEMEN?

A. In medieval times the term ‘FREEMEN’ was given to Male Citizens who have acquired certain Privileges and Right either by birth rights or being granted the FREEDOMSHIP by a Sovereign. This gave them the Freedom to live and work in a City. We here in Gloucester still grant the Freedom to the City to those who can prove that they have the birth rights.

Q. ARE FREEMEN AND FREEMASONS THE SAME THING?

A. No, both the Freemen and Freemasons are completely separate Organisations. The only thing that our Organisations have in common in Gloucester are that we are friends.
