My working background has been in archaeology and history. I have been involved in archaeological excavation and draughtsmanship, research, museum curatorship and local history writing.
Inspired originally and specifically by the richness and vibrancy of Medieval art, I have developed a painting style of my own that puts a medieval ‘spin’ on to my subjects for the purpose of storytelling and illustration. My paintings are unashamedly pastiches that draw on historic styles but with the added ‘twist’ of my own invention that makes the images original and contemporary.

His latent interest in arts and crafts has surfaced at various points in his life and started with a period in which pottery was the main interest. He attended a variety of classes and obtained a pottery teaching qualification from summer school at Loughborough University, bought a potters wheel and for a fleeting moment thought of becoming a potter. His interest in watercolour painting has been developing over many years with attendance of a variety of painting classes and workshops. It was the introduction to the work of Judi Whitton at one of her exhibitions and the subsequent attendance at her classes and workshops that transformed an interest into a passion. Despite believing that watercolour is arguably the least forgiving medium to paint in, John finds that it suits his style, which could be described as loose and impressionistic. In John’s words “When it comes to detail, I don’t have the patience which in many ways is a benefit to a watercolour painter as it is the fiddling at the end which can destroy the painting.” The other distinctive feature of John’s paintings is his use of colour. John uses much stronger tones than many watercolour painters and employs a mixture of washes and direct application. John admires the painting style of a number of the French Impressionists especially Alfred Sisley. Of the more recent painters Edward Seago, John Yardley and Alvaro Castagnet are favourites.

We are family run public house set in the charming Cotswold village of Chaford and are very proud of our finest real ales and home cooking. It is thought the building was constructed in the early 1700’s for a Doctor from London as a holiday home. When the construction of the Thames & Severn canal got underway in the mid 1700’s, the canal company purchased the building and turned it into a public house with lodgings. It is interesting that the canal company had its own currency and therefore the Navvies and workers could only spend their earnings in canal company premises. Not a bad way of ensuring your business. It has remained a pub ever since.
We bought the New Red Lion as a freehouse in 1991 from Whitebread and took the Pub over in May 1992.
Our lovely Georgian home is in the beautiful South Cotswolds village of Chalford. Nestled in the Golden Valley the village has a Post Office, two Pubs and is surrounded by stunning countryside. We offer Bed and Breakfast from a choice of our guest rooms.
We try to make your stay as special as possible, so as well as Bed and Breakfast fresh, simple home cooked evening meals in the dining room are available.

My name is John Seex and I work as a psychotherapist, trainer, supervisor and organisational consultant. My approach is based on supporting people to develop compassion and understanding towards themselves and others. Often our life and work is characterised by an internal struggle which blocks our ability to be open to others. When we can accept and understand what we feel, we can be more flexible in how we work with ourselves and others.
I hope you will find it useful. I think that is important as your elected representative that you know what I am doing on your behalf. If I can be of any help or you have suggestions please feel free to contact me. You can also follow me on Twitter and Facebook. Find out about me at About Debbie, look at my recipes as cookery is my other passion after my family and politics. Look at my work in Articles, News and Campaigns and feel free to come to my surgery.
I am married to Rob and have a daughter Samantha who attends Severn View Primary Academy in Stroud, and I am very lucky to have been the District Council representative for Chalford.
I love what I do, which is to help people get through the maze of bureaucracy and sign post them to the solutions. I also love being part of the community both in Chalford and Stroud. Who would have thought that in the 19th Century there were running battles between both communities and now we all work together.
My passions are my family, cooking, politics and football, well actually Manchester City, who although a great team now I remember well and more affectionately as a child.
I believe passionately in helping local people and helping them to help themselves

Since childhood I’ve enjoyed all aspects of the arts and couldn’t have chosen a better place to live than Stroud. It’s a town full of artists and creative people with a very vibrant events calendar including the popular Site and Open Studios Festival which now takes place in May each year, and in which I have been a regular participant.
In recent years my particular area of interest has been in creating collages using postage stamps, which I call Stamp Collages. The reaction from most people when they see my work for the first time is one of complete surprise and it’s not until they examine my work closely that they realise what I have used to create my pictures.
As well as taking part in Open Studios, opening my studio at home to the public, I have exhibited at venues including Pegasus Arts at Thrupp, and Taurus Crafts in Lydney, and also regularly at The Old Passage Inn in Arlingham as part of the Walking the Land group of artists. Retailers including Made In Stroud, M.A.D.E. in Cirencester, Torbay Stamp Centre and Taunton Stamp Centre also stock my greetings cards. Articles about my stamp collages have appeared in the press and in stamp magazines with international circulation, including Stanley Gibbons Stamp Monthly, Stamp Magazine and The American Philatelist, and have brought many interesting contacts worldwide .

Hedgehogs have always been a much-loved feature of the British countryside, however they have suffered a huge decline in numbers and are in need of our help.
Road casualties and loss of hedgerow are two of the causes of this decline along with changes in farming and land management which have led to fewer places for hedgehogs to live and forage in the countryside. This, together with the use of pesticides and other unfriendly gardening practices all combine to leave less room for hedgehogs.
We are a registered charity and rely entirely on donations from the public and sales of our merchandise at events around the county to continue our work.

Confident and challenging best describes the work of Richard Jackson. It is the result of thoughtful development through more than 20 years of making objects in glass, that integrate concept with technical skill in their realisation. Throughout this time he has travelled widely recording images and impressions of his experiences, using drawing, writing and photography.
His resulting works in glass express his findings, and questions raised, through forms that are provocative yet harmonious, animated with markmaking and carving that challenge the boundaries between surface and internal language.

The Nelson Trust was founded in 1985 near Stroud in Gloucestershire by Roy and Mary Brash. The charity began life as a supportive shared residence for people recovering from alcohol addiction, and over a period of a few short years it developed into a residential treatment centre providing a comprehensive programme of care and support for people looking for recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
The programme brought together a staff team with a range of specialist therapeutic skills and they developed services which could support people with complex needs including trauma, mental health problems, criminal justice issues and family problems.
Over time, with the generous support of donors and grant-giving trusts, we have developed residential treatment as part of an integrated service with education and training, family work and supported resettlement housing. We have a total of nine residential houses together with a treatment centre, education centre and our administration centre in the Stroud area. The treatment centre is a former school house a short walk from the residential accommodation in the beautiful rural setting of the Cotswolds.
Within the last decade we have developed a specialist residential service for women who have experienced trauma or abuse which is closely associated with substance dependency: women can now undertake a residential programme in safe, supportive and trauma-informed setting with an all-female staff team.

LH&G is a Grade 2 listed building, decorated with rustic-cut Cotswold stone turrets and pinnacles, built in the 1880′s as a Temperance Hall. It sits in a Victorian cluster of buildings with a small public park to the rear, leading up to the Church, ancient Shambles market and town centre.

An every day tale of life, cigarettes and matters arising!
This funny one hour, one-man show is a mixture of stand up, drama, autobiography and the occasional rant. It explores writer/actor John Bassett’s 30 year relationship with cigarettes in a lively, funny way but also looks at the changes in society that have happened towards smoking during that time. Smoking bans, smoking styles and the demonisation of the smoker are all included in the performance, as well as the drama of a life threatening illness.
If you are a smoker then you will sympathise and recognise some of the situations and if you are a non-smoker maybe you will understand the world of the smoker a little bit better.
“An hour of comedy and musical parody, whilst remaining honest and gritty…..Whether you smoke or not, there is something to appeal to you in this show, with its hard hitting honesty; This expressive stand up performance has the audience laughing, as John laughs at himself, through an autobiographical smoke screen.” – Fringe Secrets

My name is Caroline Ractliffe. Let me tell you about my shop INTRIGUE of Stroud in Gloucestershire. INTRIGUE is an eclectic mix of clothes and gifts, all of which I personally source including as many fair-trade products as possible. I do have something in my shop for everyone!
As owner of INTRIGUE of Stroud I am passionately aware of keeping the high street alive and of the importance of giving my precious customers a fun and a sensory shopping experience.
My retail experience began five years ago with trading at fetes, fairs and festivals. I worked my apprenticeship by running my pop-up Xmas shops (then called Bowl of Beauty) at the Cornhill area of Stroud for two years before opening my permanent shop INTRIGUE of Stroud in Kendrick Street in June 2013.
My customers tell me they find my shop window displays, outside rails and baskets colourful and the masses of plaques and signs amusing, and indeed they tempt many inside.
I love the fact that my shop makes people smile! In fact the strap line for INTRIGUE of Stroud is “Do More Of What Makes You Happy!”
I hope I welcome everyone into my shop with a genuine cheery ‘hello’. After a few moments and if appropriate I ask if they are happy browsing and offer them (depending on the time of year) one of either an elderflower pressé, a ginger beer, a dandelion and burdock or a mulled wine! If customers have young (especially fidgety) children with them I offer a jammy dodger while being aware of not wanting to overdo the hospitality!
Caroline Ractliffe opened her eclectic clothing and gift shop, INTRIGUE of Stroud, in June 2013 after starting her retail journey trading at fetes, fairs and festivals and then running pop-up Christmas shops in Stroud’s Cornhill.
Intrigue’s products are all personally ethically sourced by Caroline including many fairtrade items. “I believe we should do more of what makes us happy and I hope Intrigue brings a ray of sunshine to the high street offering a very sensory shopping experience!” she said.
Caroline is firmly part of Stroud’s independent retail scene. The shop itself is a riot of colours from clothing sourced ethically from across the world, alongside a plethora of quirky gifts.

His daughter Joan was sentenced to light the fire. Both are the victims of illogical and unreasonable rules which have angry echoes for anyone confronted by an insane enforcement of law which is outdated, outmoded and cruel.

Solid Air
The music of John Martyn and Nick Drake
Also including songs by Joni Mitchell and Neil Young
Sunday 24th April 7:30pm
£12.00
John Martyn OBE, a maverick and a wildcard, he was an incredibly sensitive songwriter with a knowledge and natural ability on guitar that was effortless; a disciple Davy Graham and Bert Jansch. John’s highest artistic point was his most contagious and listened to Album ‘Solid Air’ (written for Nick Drake).
Nick Drake. A Singer/Songwriter and recording artist during ’68 – ’74. Nick was hardly noticed at the time; overshadowed by many other more strident artists during an incredibly influential period in popular music. It was only over the past decade that his perfect, fragile songs and his intricate guitar style have been re-discovered by a more restful, greying and understanding audience worldwide and his genius has been fully appreciated. Nick Drake is now loved the world over.
Keith James has played over 1,500 concerts celebrating this wonderful music. His concerts have never been considered as a tribute, much more a personal and intimate performance of something uniquely beautiful that can otherwise no longer be heard in a live context. Ian Rankin

Talk by Phillip Hockley CSB
Masonic Hall, The Hill, Merrywalks, Stroud GL5 4EP
SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER at 2.00pm
After sustaining a debilitating injury which was diagnosed as rendering him permanently disabled, Phillip Hockley began investigating ways to improve his situation. Along the course of his search, he attended a lecture on Christian Science.
‘During that lecture,’ he says, ‘I found something that was indeed life-transforming. Christian Science gave me a new view of God that I’d not had before: a view of God as Love itself, divine Love that loved me fully. I also discovered that this loving God was not the source of my troubles (which were many) but the solution to them. My life began to improve quickly and I became a healthy man.’
After the difference Christian Science made in his own life, Phillip knew he needed to share it with others dealing with similar mindsets of discouragement. ‘From that moment on I knew I had found something very special and could hardly wait to explain this experience to others—this ability to love and be loved by God,’ he says.
Through honest discussion about the questions sceptics ask, this one hour talk tackles the essentials of Christian Science – its theology, its Christianity and its role in healing – giving an insider’s look at Christian Science treatment through prayer for physical cure.
For those who have resisted a serious consideration of Christian Science, this talk gives a clear, logical and compelling response to a number of questions including:
- Isn’t Christian Science prayer treatment an out-dated method in the light of modern medical advancements?
- Is Christian Science healing synonymous with positive thinking or faith-healing?
This talk also presents the life of Mary Baker Eddy and her path of discovery, bringing out events in her early medical practice and some of her first healings through prayer that led up to discovering the eternal laws of Christ healing practised by Bible patriarchs, prophets, Christ Jesus, early Christians and many today.
Free entry to talk . Free and ample parking right outside the Hall.
Starts at 2pm and is followed by a question and answer session.

The talk is sponsored by The Stroud Christian Science Church and Reading Room, 2 Lansdown.
Open daily at 10.30am until 3pm, except Sundays,
Sunday service at 10.30 and Wednesday testimony meeting at 7pm.

The Byre at Quercus Bluff:
You can lie in bed at this romantic Cotswold hideaway and gaze out of the window over a rural scene that has hardly changed in a century. The Byre at Quercus Bluff is a unique holiday cottage that has been created by its craftsman owner to provide a peaceful rustic retreat in the heart of the South Cotswolds countryside.
The Byre is approached via a long unmade track which leads down hill from the outskirts of Painswick to the peaceful pastures of Quercus Bluff farmstead. The former cow byre and adjoining barn (now the owner’s home) have been imaginatively converted using locally sourced materials, including felled oak from the farm’s woodland for the doors, window frames and roof timbers, and reclaimed flagstones from Sheepscombe Church for the floor .The hand crafted buildings have been featured in “Grand Designs” magazine (June 2004), as well as “English Country Interiors” and “The New Country Style England” books. It also features in Continental publications – click here to view Pauline Joosten’s beautiful photographs.
Three bedrooms and a vaulted living room are simply furnished with hand-crafted and rustic items, and all the rooms overlook the garden and valley beyond.
This is a place of peaceful solitude and privacy, a chance to enjoy the slower pace of life of a bygone age.
Based in Stroud, Gloucestershire and with over two decades of experience in the industry, we are leaders in the supply and maintenence of motorcycles

Grass Strip Aviation Ltd was formed in June 2007 with the intention of importing American FAR Part 103-compliant aircraft into the UK to take advantage of CAA Exemption No.633 covering sub-115kg microlights. This Exemption was incorporated into the UK Air Navigation Order 2007 at Amendment 2 dated January 2008.
We were very attracted by the Airdrome Aeroplanes range of aircraft, and negotiations with Robert baslee of Airdrome Aeroplanes in Missouri led to us being appointed as their UK Agent, as well as establishing that a UK version of both their FAR Part 103 aircraft (The Eindecker and the Dream Classic) could be produced. These are the aircraft kits that we currently market and the designs have nearly ten years of track record behind them in the USA.
The Directors of GSAL are all experienced microlight pilots and between us we have many decades of experience in the Automotive and Aerospace industries, covering manufacture, servicing, certification and testing.
We have an expanding list of products all made from these beautiful timbers with the Limited Edition Tables the latest addition. All British, all our products are made in the lovely Cotswolds.
Our aim is to offer truly sustainable products with the lowest carbon footprint we can manage but they must all be beautiful, practical and really affordable as well. It is a big ask, but we think we have met that challenge. There is no need to live with anything other than beautiful things around us even going into a low energy world and these improve our feeling of wellbeing and encourage us not to replace things. We intend all our products to last ’a lifetime’

The Bathe family have run this small farm since moving here in 1912.

The ornate, near 400-year-old Cotswold property ‘The Hill’, tucked away off Merrywalks in Stroud, is being put back on the map by the special events caterers.
“The fact that we are now the Hills of The Hill made it feel like it was meant to be,” said Mike, who once cooked for the Queen on one of her visits to Gloucestershire.
The couple’s firm ‘Occasions at The Hill’ caters for a range of family events from birthday parties to weddings and funeral wakes.
Local businesses make the most of the location and its on-site catering for private lunches as well as for meetings and seminars.
Located just outside of Stroud in the picturesque village of Brimscombe, The Yew Tree is right in the heart of the Cotswolds and is a perfect base from which to explore all of the countryside and entertainment the area has to offer.
Brimscombe is situated in a valley where the A419, the Stroudwater canal, the river Frome and the railway share space which divided the residents on either side. For many years the villagers from Thrupp and Brimscombe were separate communities. Even the Youth Club had to close because of conflict between youngsters from the villages of Thrupp and Brimscombe.
In 1988 Holy Trinity Church, Brimscombe was preparing to celebrate its 150 year anniversary which was to occur in 1989. Elizabeth Peters headed up a team to design mugs, t-shirts, sweatshirts, notelets and a Fête! The GRAND Church Fête took place on 27 May 1989 and was held on the Brimscombe & Thrupp Playing Fields. The then Member of Parliament, Roger Knapman opened it. The Church put on a drama – the Bible in mime – and there were numerous stalls and a fun fair. Members of Brimscombe School ran the tea tent and Whitbreads supplied the Beer.
It was such a success – raising money for Nelson Trust, Brimscombe School and Cotswold Hospice that it was decided to have another similar event the next year. Philip Marmont, who lived at Mount Cottage, Walls Quarry, Brimscombe, stated that he had met people he hadn’t seen for over 20 years, and it was because of him that the GRAND Village Fête was born! (Unfortunately he died some years ago and is not here now to celebrate our 25th Anniversary).
Elizabeth Peters, with the help of numerous volunteers, has organised the fête ever since. Over the years the event has raised in excess of £100,000 for local charities, although its main objective is a community occasion. Local industry and the parish councils help fund the happening!
The GRAND Village Fête is more of an institution mainly because of its long standing relationship with local schools – Thrupp, Brimscombe, Christchurch Chalford and Minchinhampton Primary schools – which take part in designing a poster to advertise the Fête, Parish Councils – Minchinhampton, Brimscombe & Thrupp and Chalford, Stroud District Council and the ecclesiastical parishes of Chalford, Brimscombe and Stroud. The main attractions, dogs, tea tent, bar, hot food, stalls, pitches, competitions, vintage vehicles and fun fair are the mainstay, but over the years more and more have come on board. Entry is free and there is ample room for cars in Football Club car park.
On 21 May 2016 the Fête will be celebrating its 27th Anniversary. Frampton Silver Band has been booked especially! All the stalls have now been taken, but a couple of pitches may be available, please contact Elizabeth Peters on 01453 887980.
Since studying Graphic Design and graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 1982, I have been fortunate to have employed both design and drawing in my work.
My gouache paintings and wood engraved artwork can now be scanned and e-mailed to all corners of the world. For me it is essentially a hand crafted process working with French and Japanese made paper, engraving on English Boxwood and printing the blocks on a 1859 Albion hand press

An 18th century Pleasure Ground
Situated outside the beautiful Cotswold town of Painswick, and famous for its snowdrop display, the Rococo Garden is a fascinating step back to a flamboyant and sensual period of English Garden Design, when gardens were almost theatrical sets used as a backdrop to decadent garden parties. One thing they were not were great flower gardens, any plantings included being just light decoration around the central mini landscape theme. This gem of a garden, which was originally laid out in the early 18th century, is set in a hidden Cotswold valley with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.
