Painswick Music Society

St Mary's Church, Painswick
Hollyhock Lane Painswick GL6 6XH GB

The Society was formed in 1946 and, since then, has arranged four chamber music society concerts each Spring.

Our aims are to provide the opportunity to hear and enjoy chamber music of the highest quality, to provide a varied programme for the season and to engage artists of a high standard. Only professional artists of a high calibre are engaged; however we also wish to encourage and engage young artists at the start of their careers.

Notable performers have included Janet Baker; Felicity Lott, Freddy Kempf, Thomas Allen, Emma Johnson, Tasmin Little, Angela Hewitt, The Sixteen, Steven Isserliss and The Kings Singers and many top class ensembles such as the Allegri Quartet, the Schubert Ensemble, the Carducci Quartet. the Nash Ensemble and the Orchestra of the Swan. The Society occasionally commissions new works and artists have also been engaged to give workshops and concerts in local schools.

In particular, the Society wishes to encourage concert-going amongst the young. This is done by offering tickets at nominal prices and special rates for school parties.

A warm welcome from Ashton House B&B – a listed 17th century former farmhouse, ideal for walkers and visitors.  We are situated in the middle of the village of Painswick on the Cotswold Way, a short walk from a number of quality pubs and restaurants.

Painswick, the “Queen of the Cotswolds”, is a picturesque medieval wool town, built in a mellow Cotswold stone quarried locally.  The narrow streets are full of interest.  The 15th Century post office building is the oldest in the country. The church, with its famous tombs and 99 yew trees, bears battle scars on the tower from the Civil War.  We boast the oldest village rugby club, the oldest bowling green, and the oldest post office building in England.

There are plenty  of shopping, recreational and visitor opportunities close to hand. These include the Rococo Gardens, Prinknash Bird & Deer Park, Laurie Lee (“Cider with Rosie”) country, horse riding, dry-slope skiing and gliding. Village events include the nationally-noted Art Couture Festival, Painswick Apple Day, and the famous “clypping” ceremony.

The Cotswold Way national trail is literally on the doorstep, and there are numerous other footpaths to explore in the surrounding countryside.

We are a good base for many local events, such as the Cheltenham Festivals, Three Choirs, Gatcombe, polo at Cirencester, cheese-rolling etc.

An 18th century Pleasure Ground

Situated outside the beautiful Cotswold town of Painswick, and famous for its snowdrop display, the Rococo Garden is a fascinating step back to a flamboyant and sensual period of English Garden Design, when gardens were almost theatrical sets used as a backdrop to decadent garden parties. One thing they were not were great flower gardens, any plantings included being just light decoration around the central mini landscape theme. This gem of a garden, which was originally laid out in the early 18th century, is set in a hidden Cotswold valley with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

The Byre at Quercus Bluff:

You can lie in bed at this romantic Cotswold hideaway and gaze out of the window over a rural scene that has hardly changed in a century. The Byre at Quercus Bluff is a unique holiday cottage that has been created by its craftsman owner to provide a peaceful rustic retreat in the heart of the South Cotswolds countryside.

The Byre is approached via a long unmade track which leads down hill from the outskirts of Painswick to the peaceful pastures of Quercus Bluff farmstead. The former cow byre and adjoining barn (now the owner’s home) have been imaginatively converted using locally sourced materials, including felled oak from the farm’s woodland for the doors, window frames and roof timbers, and reclaimed flagstones from Sheepscombe Church for the floor .The hand crafted buildings have been featured in “Grand Designs” magazine (June 2004), as well as “English Country Interiors” and “The New Country Style England” books. It also features in Continental publications – click here to view Pauline Joosten’s beautiful photographs.

Three bedrooms and a vaulted living room are simply furnished with hand-crafted and rustic items, and all the rooms overlook the garden and valley beyond.

This is a place of peaceful solitude and privacy, a chance to enjoy the slower pace of life of a bygone age.

After graduating in Physics, John has spent most of his adult life
as an employed and freelance software development manager and engineer. This led him to move away from the South East of England to the Cotswolds in mid 1970’s where he now lives with his wife, daughter and son.

His latent interest in arts and crafts has surfaced at various points in his life and started with a period in which pottery was the main interest. He attended a variety of classes and obtained a pottery teaching qualification from summer school at Loughborough University, bought a potters wheel and for a fleeting moment thought of becoming a potter. His interest in watercolour painting has been developing over many years with attendance of a variety of painting classes and workshops. It was the introduction to the work of Judi Whitton at one of her exhibitions and the subsequent attendance at her classes and workshops that transformed an interest into a passion. Despite believing that watercolour is arguably the least forgiving medium to paint in, John finds that it suits his style, which could be described as loose and impressionistic. In John’s words “When it comes to detail, I don’t have the patience which in many ways is a benefit to a watercolour painter as it is the fiddling at the end which can destroy the painting.” The other distinctive feature of John’s paintings is his use of colour. John uses much stronger tones than many watercolour painters and employs a mixture of washes and direct application. John admires the painting style of a number of the French Impressionists especially Alfred Sisley. Of the more recent painters Edward Seago, John Yardley and Alvaro Castagnet are favourites.

Stroud Community Agriculture is a new type of sustainable farming.

Built on cooperation and mutual support the risks and rewards of farming are shared between the farmers and consumers. The consumers commit themselves to supporting the farm and providing a fair income for the farmers. The farmers can then develop the health and fertility of the farm, its wildlife and environment. All the produce from the farm is shared between the supporting consumers or sold locally if there is a surplus.

These are just some of the things that inspire Annie Hutchinson to make her weird and wonderful creatures. Some mirror real life situations, the humour and the irony, some stem from the imagination or a tale told in childhood remembered and forever intriguing.
Annie has always had a love for textures which has developed consistently since studying Fine Art Sculpture in Cheltenham. Many traditional skills are performed in the making of these armature figures, needle felting, hand and machine stitching, incorporating appliqué and embroidery, simple lino-cut printing
techniques and painted images
These skills married with Annie’s magpie tendencies to seek vintage materials and discarded treasures come together to form the basis for her other worldly folk.
This recent body of work has been widely exhibited and a number of private commissions have ensued.

LH&G is a Grade 2 listed building, decorated with rustic-cut Cotswold stone turrets and pinnacles, built in the 1880′s as a Temperance Hall. It sits in a Victorian cluster of buildings with a small public park to the rear, leading up to the Church, ancient Shambles market and town centre.

The much-used building is owned by Stroud Town Council to be held in perpetuity for the community, and run as a community venue by a small charity comprising a Board of Trustees, a part-time Administrator and a number of other key personnel, largely volunteers.

Used for evening events – music, drama performances, film screenings, private parties – and daytime classes – dance groups, tai chi, pilates, choirs and youth drama, this is the community centre of Stroud.

The Biodynamic Agricultural Association was founded in Great Britain in 1929 to promote biodynamic farming and gardening. It also administers the Demeter symbol and gives support through a network of advisers, the journal Star and Furrow, a news-sheet, conferences, seminars and workshops.

The Association’s main objectives are to foster and promote the agricultural impulse started by Rudolf Steiner in 1924 (the date of his course of lectures on agriculture) and to help and support those wishing to put into practice the bio-dynamic method. With these objectives in mind it keeps in close touch with the biodynamic impulse abroad, with other aspects of anthroposophical work (especially on nutrition and other sciences) and with various organisations concerned with a non-chemical approach to the soil, environment and health.

Membership is open to anybody interested, whether or not they are practicing farmers or gardeners. The present average subscription rate is £30 per year for members in the United Kingdom and Eire and £20.00 per year for students and senior citizens; £35 for members in Europe and £42 for all other countries.

We are a friendly congregation of just over a hundred people from all walks of life.

Our worship is a mix of modern songs plus traditional hymns and we have a variety of speakers from Sunday to Sunday. With an evangelical / charismatic ethos, we see ourselves as having a strong ‘family’ identity with all ages represented, including a healthy number of children and young families.

We have a strong commitment to Stroud and a large proportion of us are involved with the many social concerns and inter-church projects in the Stroud area.

We are a family on a mission to see God’s Kingdom extended, serving the local community by bringing God’s love, hope and freedom through the transforming message of Jesus Christ.

We are part of the family of churches under Salt & Light Ministries, members of the Evangelical Alliance, and part of Churches Together in Stroud working in conjunction with PSALMS and Ignition.

Stroud Valleys Family Practice is a long established NHS general practice offering a friendly, helpful and efficient service.  We are involved in the training of doctors, particularly those who wish to go on to become the GPs of the future.  As our name indicates, we are a family orientated practice.  We know that families come in all shapes and sizes and we are happy to welcome all family members, whether there are many of them or just one.  Of course we also realise that not everyone has a family and we extend the same welcome to all. Because we are a small surgery we think that helps us to build good relationships with our patients, and we try to ensure that one doctor is responsible for the whole family to give continuity of care. If you have a preference to see a certain doctor let us know and we will always do our best to accommodate you.

Every one of us working at the surgery really enjoys the variety of general practice and our aim is to provide up to date care whilst always keeping the individual person in mind.  We strive to ensure that our patients receive the best attention at all times.

Talk by Phillip Hockley CSB

Masonic Hall, The Hill, Merrywalks, Stroud  GL5 4EP

SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER at 2.00pm

After sustaining a debilitating injury which was diagnosed as rendering him permanently disabled, Phillip Hockley began investigating ways to improve his situation.  Along the course of his search, he attended a lecture on Christian Science.

‘During that lecture,’ he says, ‘I found something that was indeed life-transforming. Christian Science gave me a new view of God that I’d not had before: a view of God as Love itself, divine Love that loved me fully. I also discovered that this loving God was not the source of my troubles (which were many) but the solution to them. My life began to improve quickly and I became a healthy man.’

After the difference Christian Science made in his own life, Phillip knew he needed to share it with others dealing with similar mindsets of discouragement.  ‘From that moment on I knew I had found something very special and could hardly wait to explain this experience to others—this ability to love and be loved by God,’ he says.

FlierFeb4.jpg
Masonic Hall, The Hill, Merrywalks, Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK, GL5 4EP 2.94 mi

Through honest discussion about the questions sceptics ask, this one hour talk tackles the essentials of Christian Science – its theology, its Christianity and its role in healing – giving an insider’s look at Christian Science treatment through prayer for physical cure.

For those who have resisted a serious consideration of Christian Science, this talk gives a clear, logical and compelling response to a number of questions including:

  • Isn’t Christian Science prayer treatment an out-dated method in the light of modern medical advancements?
  • Is Christian Science healing synonymous with positive thinking or faith-healing?

This talk also presents the life of Mary Baker Eddy and her path of discovery, bringing out events in her early medical practice and some of her first healings through prayer that led up to discovering the eternal laws of Christ healing practised by Bible patriarchs, prophets, Christ Jesus, early Christians and many today.

Free entry to talk . Free and ample parking right outside the Hall.

Starts at 2pm and is followed by a question and answer session.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The talk is sponsored by The Stroud Christian Science Church and Reading Room, 2 Lansdown.

Open daily at 10.30am until 3pm, except Sundays,

Sunday service at 10.30 and Wednesday testimony meeting at 7pm.

Randwick, Stroud, Gloucestershire GL6 6JA, United Kingdom 2.96 mi

Set in the picturesque village of Randwick in the heart of the Cotswolds the Vine Tree Pub offers a warm welcome to all in need of good food, good ale and great company.

The Vine Tree, close to the famous Cotswold Way, is the centre of village life for the locals and and a haven for the weary traveller. On a typical evening you will find the pub full with a wide variety of customers, you may find one of the local clubs or organisations in the corner having a meeting, the pub darts team in mid game, a lone dog walker enjoying a sneaky pint (dog in tow) and the restaurant full of people who have come far and wide to sample the fine foods the Vine Tree has to offer, all home cooked.

On a fine day you can enjoy the tiered beer garden with its glorious views of the five valleys down into Stroud and across to Rodborough and Selsley Common, and on a cold winters day you are invited to come in and warm yourself by the real wood fire.

Whatever your reason for visiting the Vine Tree Randwick you can be sure of a warm welcome not only from Lajos & Jana the pubs landlords but from the regular customers who frequent the pub.

My name is Caroline Ractliffe.  Let me tell you about my shop INTRIGUE of Stroud in Gloucestershire. INTRIGUE is an eclectic mix of clothes and gifts, all of which I personally source including as many fair-trade products as possible.  I do have something in my shop for everyone!

As owner of INTRIGUE of Stroud I am passionately aware of keeping the high street alive and of the importance of giving my precious customers a fun and a sensory shopping experience.

My retail experience began five years ago with trading at fetes, fairs and festivals. I worked my apprenticeship by running my pop-up Xmas shops (then called Bowl of Beauty) at the Cornhill area of Stroud for two years before opening my permanent shop INTRIGUE of Stroud in Kendrick Street in June 2013.

My customers tell me they find my shop window displays, outside rails and baskets colourful and the masses of plaques and signs amusing, and indeed they tempt many inside.

I love the fact that my shop makes people smile!  In fact the strap line for INTRIGUE of Stroud is “Do More Of What Makes You Happy!”

I hope I welcome everyone into my shop with a genuine cheery ‘hello’.  After a few moments and if appropriate I ask if they are happy browsing and offer them (depending on the time of year) one of either an elderflower pressé, a ginger beer, a dandelion and burdock or a mulled wine!  If customers have young (especially fidgety) children with them I offer a jammy dodger while being aware of not wanting to overdo the hospitality!

Caroline Ractliffe opened her eclectic clothing and gift shop, INTRIGUE of Stroud, in June 2013 after starting her retail journey trading at fetes, fairs and festivals and then running pop-up Christmas shops in Stroud’s Cornhill.

Intrigue’s products are all personally ethically sourced by Caroline including many fairtrade items. “I believe we should do more of what makes us happy and I hope Intrigue brings a ray of sunshine to the high street offering a very sensory shopping experience!” she said.

Caroline is firmly part of Stroud’s independent retail scene. The shop itself is a riot of colours from clothing sourced ethically from across the world, alongside a plethora of quirky gifts.

These two successful colleges merged in February 2012, to give our students more choice, greater opportunities and a wider range of facilities from a single, larger college.

At SGS, we have three main campuses – Stroud, Filton and WISE – as well as many local community venues, and we welcome around 15,500 full-time and part-time students of all ages every year. We also have centres in the centre of Bristol, at the West of England Academy of Art and at the Bristol Zoo & Gardens.

As a merged college, we now offer an even wider range of vocational and academic courses, in an even greater range of subjects.

Even though we are a bigger college, we are committed to giving each and every one of our students the best possible education.

Tickets £15.00 (£13.00 concs)

Cregan & Co are a hugely entertaining and talented band fronted by Rod Stewart’s guitarist, fellow songwriter, producer and musical director, Jim Cregan. It’s an evening of great music from the Rod Stewart songbook, as well as featuring other hits that Jim has written over the years with other rock stars.  Jim joined Rod Stewart’s band in 1977 and became his music director, co-producer and co-writer.  He co-wrote some of Rod Stewart’s greatest hits including Passion, Tonight I’m Yours and Forever Young. Jim also co-wrote Brighton Beach which was on Rod’s 2013 album Time and released as a single that same year. Jim was guitarist with Family and Cockney Rebel and he’s responsible for the iconic acoustic guitar break in Cockney Rebel’s Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile).  He has worked as a writer, producer and musician with many rock and pop stars including Art Garfunkel, Ronnie Wood, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Tina Turner, Cat Stevens, Joe Cocker, Katie Melua and Lulu. The show features the excellent Ben Mills (former X Factor finalist) on vocals and guitar who now firmly puts his own stamp on some of Rod Stewart’s biggest hits alongside the man who wrote them.

“If you can’t afford my tickets go see these guys – they’re just as good and half the price!”  Rod Stewart    http://www.creganandco.com http://www.jimcregan.com/Credits.html

The Sentence

Tuesday 19th April 8.00pm (George Room Theatre Season)

The Sentence is the story of John Scrivener who, in the 16th century was sentenced to death by burning. His crime was to translate the Bible into English. His daughter Joan was sentenced to light the fire. Both are the victims of illogical and unreasonable rules which have angry echoes for anyone confronted by an insane enforcement of law which is outdated, outmoded and cruel.

This powerful play explores themes of language and justice looking at the difficulties facing people who dare to challenge authority. Age advice 10+

Solid Air

The music of John Martyn and Nick Drake

Also including songs by Joni Mitchell and Neil Young

Sunday 24th April 7:30pm

£12.00

John Martyn OBE, a maverick and a wildcard, he was an incredibly sensitive songwriter with a knowledge and natural ability on guitar that was effortless; a disciple Davy Graham and Bert Jansch. John’s highest artistic point was his most contagious and listened to Album ‘Solid Air’ (written for Nick Drake).

Nick Drake. A Singer/Songwriter and recording artist during ’68 – ’74. Nick was hardly noticed at the time; overshadowed by many other more strident artists during an incredibly influential period in popular music. It was only over the past decade that his perfect, fragile songs and his intricate guitar style have been re-discovered by a more restful, greying and understanding audience worldwide and his genius has been fully appreciated. Nick Drake is now loved the world over.

Keith James has played over 1,500 concerts celebrating this wonderful music. His concerts have never been considered as a tribute, much more a personal and intimate performance of something uniquely beautiful that can otherwise no longer be heard in a live context. Ian Rankin

‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent .

Since childhood I’ve enjoyed all aspects of the arts and couldn’t have chosen a better place to live than Stroud. It’s a town full of artists and creative people with a very vibrant events calendar including the popular Site and Open Studios Festival which now takes place in May each year, and in which I have been a regular participant.
In recent years my particular area of interest has been in creating collages using postage stamps, which I call Stamp Collages. The reaction from most people when they see my work for the first time is one of complete surprise and it’s not until they examine my work closely that they realise what I have used to create my pictures.
As well as taking part in Open Studios, opening my studio at home to the public, I have exhibited at venues including Pegasus Arts at Thrupp, and Taurus Crafts in Lydney, and also regularly at The Old Passage Inn in Arlingham as part of the Walking the Land group of artists. Retailers including Made In Stroud, M.A.D.E. in Cirencester, Torbay Stamp Centre and Taunton Stamp Centre also stock my greetings cards. Articles about my stamp collages have appeared in the press and in stamp magazines with international circulation, including Stanley Gibbons Stamp Monthly, Stamp Magazine and The American Philatelist, and have brought many interesting contacts worldwide .

An every day tale of life, cigarettes and matters arising!
This funny one hour, one-man show is a mixture of stand up, drama, autobiography and the occasional rant. It explores writer/actor John Bassett’s 30 year relationship with cigarettes in a lively, funny way but also looks at the changes in society that have happened towards smoking during that time. Smoking bans, smoking styles and the demonisation of the smoker are all included in the performance, as well as the drama of a life threatening illness.
If you are a smoker then you will sympathise and recognise some of the situations and if you are a non-smoker maybe you will understand the world of the smoker a little bit better.
“An hour of comedy and musical parody, whilst remaining honest and gritty…..Whether you smoke or not, there is something to appeal to you in this show, with its hard hitting honesty; This expressive stand up performance has the audience laughing, as John laughs at himself, through an autobiographical smoke screen.” – Fringe Secrets

Britain’s Greenest Energy

Green electricity is always going to be better for the environment than conventional electricity from fossil fuels and nuclear sources with their associated emissions and radioactive waste (which we still haven’t found a long term disposal solution for).

It’s this sort of electricity that The Big Six and most independent companies supply. But not all green electricity is equal- some sources of it have a lower impact than others.

Saving vulnerable historic buildings in Stroud

We are a registered charity which since 1982 has been working to rescue, conserve and find new uses for historic buildings at risk of decay or demolition in Stroud. Our projects are good for Stroud’s economy and environment, turning derelict buildings into an asset to the town. The foundation for each conservation project is a sound understanding of the building’s history.

We rely on the voluntary work and determination of our trustees and build partnerships with owners, leaseholders, funders, contractors, architects and many others to make each project a success.

The Trust continues to look after the buildings in its care, educate others about the significance and value of historic buildings and assess potential new projects.

As a successful designer and maker of architectural stained glass Kim ran her own studio from 1997 to 2010. Her work can be seen in many churches as well as public and private buildings throughout the UK. Her training included a Diploma in Architectural Stained Glass at the prestigious Swansea School and a Masters Degree at York University, together with residencies at The Victoria and Albert Museum and the stained glass studios of the Cathedrals of York and Canterbury.

Her fascination with light and colour has led Kim to explore the potential of oil paints to achieve images that capture mood and invite the viewer into the painting. She paints both en plein air and also in her home-based studio, in both oil and watercolours.

My work uses pencils, inks, paints, textiles, photography and words.  It is colourful, soulful, witchy and reflecting the twists and turns of the strange journey I am taking through this land and this life. My cards are printed in the U.K using 100% recycled card, vegetable inks and compostable poly-bags, so are super earth-friendly.

My working background has been in archaeology and history. I have been involved in archaeological excavation and draughtsmanship, research, museum curatorship and local history writing.

Inspired originally and specifically by the richness and vibrancy of Medieval art, I have developed a painting style of my own that puts a medieval ‘spin’ on to my subjects for the purpose of storytelling and illustration. My paintings are unashamedly pastiches that draw on historic styles but with the added ‘twist’ of my own invention that makes the images original and contemporary.

Location. Location. Location. The Hallmark Hotel Gloucester, tickling the fringe of this historic city with its divine Romanesque and Gothic cathedral, is perfectly placed for both business and pleasure. The honey-stoned Cotswolds are within easy reach – expect instant daydreams of escaping to the country – as are the rolling hills and snaking rivers of the Welsh borders, and shopping honeypot of Cheltenham. Even closer to home, there’s a superb 18-hole golf course within a decent three-iron range, and dry ski slope just a snowball toss away – two surefire ways of relaxing after a hard meeting or conference. Of course you don’t have to step outside at all. The boutique Hallmark Hotel has a lot within its stylish contemporary walls. An awful lot. For starters there’s the 95 rooms and suites, all clean modern design with a mix of bold colours and earth tones, richly patterned carpets and seriously good beds. Then there’s our acclaimed brasserie. The rather good team of chefs alchemizes fine seasonal ingredients into a menu embracing both classic British and European dishes, and Asian and Moroccan specials, including the likes of Italian arancini and Goan prawn curry. Small wonder it’s a favourite of locals as well as guests. Naturally, you may well wish to burn as well as devour calories. You’re in the right place. As well as glass-backed squash court and excellent gym with state-of-the-art fitness kit, we’ve an inviting pool (and another for children), steam room and sauna, as well as an serene spa where highly trained therapists work wonders for the body and soul, with everything from stress busting Swedish Massages to Detoxifying Body Wraps.

Gloucester Golf Club offers a superb range of facilities, both on and off the course. Warm up and practise your swing on the new driving range before tackling the challenging 18 hole course.

The 18 hole, par 72, championship course has been designed to obtain the greatest possible benefit from the natural form of the hillside. The ground falls from a height of 600 feet to 200 feet, making the course the most interesting in the region.

The Bowls club is situated in the town of Stroud where five Cotswold valleys meet. The town was the country’s main centre for the production of the scarlet cloth used for military uniforms and still supplies the world’s requirements for billiard and snooker table cloth
