The Cheltenham & County Cycling Club was originally formed in the Autumn of 1921 as a section of the Cheltenham & County Harriers, and by the spring of 1923 the club had become a club in our own rights.

Now with membership of circa 300 we pride ourselves in being a welcoming inclusive club providing upto 10 different rides a week, both on and off road, and at a variety of paces to suit all rider abilities, from beginners to the serious racing cyclist.

We also promote a very popular series of club time trials through the summer months, plus an annual road race, and two cyclo-cross events, and open time trials.

hash.png
Cheltenham Spa, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom 0.18 mi

Hashing is a social running club.. Runs are typically between four and six miles, and are laid, in advance, by one or more HARES, usually following country footpaths or lanes or, if not, with the permission of local landowners. There are CHECKS, every half mile, or less, where better runners can run further in endeavouring to find the correct path, and lesser runners can have a rest. HASHING IS NOT A RACE, the aim is that, because of the CHECKS and various FALSE TRAILS, all the runners, from the fit to not so fit, finish at about the same time. Runs usually start and end at a pub, and it is customary for HASHERS, after the run, to take full advantage of the facilities offered. Dress is usually scruffy running gear (trainers, shorts/tracksuit, T-shirt) – don’t dress up, it can be muddy. Bring spare shoes, jeans, etc. for pub afterwards. If you’d like to try Hashing, just turn up at one of the forthcoming runs or, for confirmation of venue, to arrange a lift or for any other details, get in touch with one of the contacts contained in this site. We welcome women, men, children (with supervision), dogs, mums, dads, grand-parents. Of any sexual orientation. Or none. From any country, politics, religion, creed, etc. Basically, we’ll take anybody! Cheers. Come and enjoy.

Airthrie School Christ church Road, Cheltenham Gloucestershire, GL50 2NY 0.45 mi

Airthrie is a thriving independent day school and nursery for boys and girls aged 3 to 11 years and is situated in Christchurch Road in the heart of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Airthrie School was established in 1940, when the house was used as an evacuation base for an established school in Margate. Under threat in this vulnerable position, the Principal and young pupils moved from the dangers of this coastal town, settling into the safety offered by midland Cheltenham. A caring and homely environment was established for these young boarding pupils and it quickly became attractive to local parents. After the war, the school continued to develop and its reputation grew until today when it is a thriving day school which has seen much educational progression. Nonetheless, what remains constant is the family atmosphere on which Airthrie was founded. Friendly and non-institutional, it offers a welcoming ambience well suited to young pupils taking their first steps in education.

Airthrie is accommodated in two linked Victorian houses which have undergone a considerable amount of modernisation and expansion. Developments are always carried out after careful consideration and sympathetic planning in order to provide children with the appropriate facilities required for today’s education.

The impressive Bacon Theatre completed in 1991 and built to a very high standard, boasts excellent sightlines and state-of-the-art facilities.

The theatre owes its name to Mr Christopher Bacon, headmaster of Dean Close School from 1979-1998, who fundraised tirelessly to build his dream. Today the 566-seat Bacon Theatre plays host to the best in professional touring theatre, live music, dance, film and celebrity speakers as well as an extensive range of productions by local talented youth and community groups and charities.

The more intimate Prince Michael Hall, opened in 1997, is a vibrantly designed 120-seat recital venue, hosting smaller scale musical events throughout the year.

We also have the beautiful Greek style, Tuckwell Amphitheatre, which is nestled in a secluded corner of the school and can accommodate 300 for our lively Open-air Theatre Festival events at the end of July.

The Royal Union Inn has established itself as one of the best examples of what a ‘REAL’ Pub should be. Tucked away in the quiet ‘village’ of Tivoli, it is a ten minute equidistant walk from the train station and Cheltenham Town Centre.

It has a range of eight REAL ales and is a cemented entry for the Cheltenham area in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide. Although supporting as many local micro brewers as possible, it also stocks award winning ales from throughout the U.K.

Since developing an old skittle alley into a light and warm extension to the premises, including a small but well equipped kitchen, the Union has enjoyed success by creating REAL home cooked, imaginative food, with the emphasis on ‘sharing’ meals. (20oz Fillet of Rump, Portuguese Chicken, Whole BBQ’d Leg of Lamb, shoulder of Pork), so please see our menus. Despite the increase in people eating and our high ranking on trip advisor, the landlord is insistent that the Union is a Pub where you can get great food to go with your ale, rather than a ‘Pub Restaurant’ or ‘Gastro Pub’.

Guild is the association of former pupils of Cheltenham Ladies’ College.
It was established in 1884 by College’s 2nd Principal, Miss Beale and currently has more than 8,000 active members across 71 countries worldwide (see our members world map).
It is free to join and offers many benefits including events and careers support and networking.  If you know a former pupil of College who is not presently a Guild member then please ask her to contact the Guild Office – find out more.
Many Guild members also return to College to take part in the annual reunions and to see for themselves how impressively College has moved into the 21st century.  Guild is a wonderful source of support to College and former pupils generously offer support to current girls making University and career decisions.

College first opened its doors to 82 pupils in February 1854 with the purpose of providing girls with a thorough academic education. We have remained committed to that pioneering goal, while adapting to a complex and changing world.  We are currently one of the largest communities of boarding and day girls in Europe. Today, around 850 pupils from around the world benefit from the knowledge and expertise gained over the last 160 years of putting girls first.

All girls enjoy the teaching and specialist care of our highly qualified academic and pastoral staff, with Housemistresses and Tutors available to give advice and guidance at every stage of a girl’s life. The commitment of our staff is backed by excellent facilities. Your daughter will be taken seriously; her ideas will be listened to; her concerns will be addressed. She will be joining a school which is supportive, interested in her and challenging.

Parabola Arts Centre was opened by Sir Richard Eyre on the 3rd October 2009. PAC is owned by Cheltenham Ladies’ College and is used by the school for performances, exhibitions and events.

PAC was built by Foster Wilson Architects. Their brief was demanding and wide-ranging: to be a creative learning environment for the students of the Cheltenham Ladies’ College, to develop a cutting edge arts space, to offer spaces for hire to the local community and to meet the need for a creative hub in Cheltenham. All this inside a Grade II* listed building on a constricted site.

The original, listed Bayshill House was transformed into a gallery, bar and foyer area. The villa also houses all the rehearsal spaces, offices, video editing suite, dance studio and library. This means that the regular activity of the building –the teaching, rehearsing and the daily work of the theatre staff, takes place in the light

Our church is part of the Christian Science community in Gloucestershire.

Christian Science is a faith based on the Bible and especially on the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. The Church of Christ, Scientist, to use the formal title of the denomination, was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 as ‘a church designed….to reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing’. For the most concise statement on our core beliefs
Also of interest may be the Tenets of Christian Science, which appear in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, on pp496-497. Click here.

On this website you will find all the information you need about our services and facilities.  You will also find explanations of what Christian Science teaches and how this can help and heal in daily life.

The EAUC is a strong alliance of universities and colleges, sector bodies and commercial organisations, working together both in the UK and internationally. We stand strong individually, but we make a far stronger impact when we work together. Education has a huge role to play but we need to drive next generation leadership to address next generation sustainability. We need to look wider, internationally, globally, to business and to the next leaders: students.

The EAUC is a not for profit Member based charity run by Members for Members. We are financed by subscriptions and service generated revenue which funds our work of representing and promoting the interests of Members and the provision of support services to drive sustainability to the heart of tertiary education across the UK and internationally

The Students’ Union is a completely separate organisation from the University but they give us £320,000* per year (which is just under half of our total turnover of £700,000) as well as providing an office for us on each campus. The rest of our income is made up from ticket sales, membership fees, advertising and anything else we can do to generate money. Any surplus we make is ploughed back in to SU services.

We are run by a group of permanent staff as well as part-time officers (current students) and paid full-time officers (students who have been elected and who take a year out to work for us). As we are a charity we also have a Board of Trustees, which is a combination of students, the full-time officers and external experts who check our finances and that we are doing what we are supposed to.

The SU has two main aims – to represent students and to provide services that make life easier and more fulfilling & enjoyable for every single student at UoG.

Remember the men of Cheltenham who gave their lives for you in the Great War 1914 – 1919.   If they were strangers to one another here in their common home, they served and wrought and died in many lands near and far as a Band of Brothers.   Learn from them so to live and die that, when you have followed them and are no more seen, you may, like them, be remembered and regretted.”   Inscriptions on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

Hesters Way, which includes the council wards of Hesters Way, Springbank, St Peter’s and St Marks, is amongst the 20% most deprived areas in Britain. It has a population of 15,583 (Maiden) and includes the highest concentration of social housing in Gloucestershire.

It was originally built in the 1950s and 1960s to house people working for GCHQ and local engineering companies.
Changes that took place over the following 30 years adversely affected the area and reflected changes in society in general. Owner occupation, structural changes in the economy and the make up of the housing stock and subsequent housing allocations have lead to a concentration of relative poverty in this area of predominantly social housing.

By the late 1980s the contrast between Hesters Way and the rest of the town was evident. By the mid 1990s there was recognition that the area had become a serious issue for Cheltenham as a whole.

In 1984 a group of local enthusiasts joined those words together, and suddenly musicians famous from LP sleeves were playing at the Queen’s Hotel. Amongst them: Archie Shepp, Max Roach, Teddy Edwards, Red Rodney, Sheila Jordan, Kenny Drew, Ray Bryant, Yakata Shiina, Kirk Lightsey and Jean Toussaint.

Also and always, the best of British players: Ronnie Scott, Bobby Wellins, Don Weller, Humphrey Lyttelton, Pete King, Tony Kofi, Ambulance, Jim Hart – a huge list goes on.

Cheltenham Jazz participation in the Music Festival led the way to the (now entirely separate) annual Jazz Festival. And CJ continues all year through, at two ideal venues: The Everyman Studio Theatre – a perfect, intimate listening space, and a room in the elegant surroundings of the Victory Club in Lypiatt Road Cheltenham with comfortable seating for up to a hundred people.

We mix London and international band gigs, with featured A* leaders supported by a fine, rhythm section, currently Dave Newton (piano), Tom Hill (bass) and Simon Radford (drums).

Cheltenham Jazz is a registered charity (No 1115807), run by a volunteer committee, with no income other than ticket revenue, profits from CD sales and the occasional sponsorship – which we accept with maximum gratitude and widespread publicity.

One of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire’s foremost chamber choirs

Jubilate draws its members from Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Cotswolds. The Conductor and Artistic Director is Ian Higginson and the choir rehearses at Francis Close Hall, University of Gloucestershire, Swindon Road, Cheltenham on Monday evenings from 7.30 – 9.30pm

Experienced singers, particularly those with good sight-reading ability, are always welcome. The choir’s repertoire encompasses sacred and secular music from the 16th century to the present day. Jubilate has sung in many of the country’s cathedrals and abbeys, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, St. Giles, Edinburgh, Bath Abbey, Westminster Abbey and Hereford Cathedral.
It has enjoyed highly successful tours to Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Liverpool, Chester and in August 2007 to Paris where the choir gave a Recital in Eglise Saint-Séverin and sang Mass in Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris.

In January 2008 the choir will be making a recording of Christmas music in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

“The chamber choir Jubilate and their conductor Ian Higginson put together a programme containing music from Purcell to Porter which showed tremendous versatility. Accompanied or a capella everything was first class, and with the cathedral’s acoustic perfect for this sort of ensemble, we were treated to a musical feast…… Three beautiful motets by Stanford stood out, but Porter’s Let’s Do It and an arrangement of Teddy Bear’s Picnic were also first class…. Add to that a glorious Kyrie from Vierne’s Messe Solonnelle and that was plenty proof that this choir are at home in any form of music….”

In September 2006 at the suggestion of my young colleague Oliver Lock I founded the Gloucestershire Youth Players for young actors over the age of 16. The group was designed to complement the Gloucestershire Young Shakespeare Theatre, or GYST ( the only UK based company for 12-16 year olds performing solely Shakespeare, uncut and unprompted) which I began in 2005. We are an entirely voluntary-aided company dependent upon ticket sales and donations for our survival.

GYP’s aims are to bring invigorating versions of Shakespeare’s texts to audiences in and around Gloucestershire. The focus is to give young people a springboard into the brilliance of one of the greatest playwrights in the English language by producing these seminal texts with an ensemble based company of serious young performers. We attempt to make what we do accessible and imaginative in its interpretation whilst keeping as faithfully as possible to the text. As one critic remarked in 2008: “GYP offers genuine opportunities to young actors and actresses to expand their knowledge of, and confidence in drama.

Jess founded Cheltenham Wellness Clinic in 2018 as a qualified and accredited reflexologist. She offers treatments in her central Cheltenham clinic, or can treat you in the comfort of your own home.

Trust me, I’m qualified

Every reflexologist will tell you they’re qualified. But what does that really mean? Rest assured you’re in safe hands with Jess: Jess completed a Level 3 reflexology course which included anatomy, business and practical modules.

And, through her own personal experience, she understands and is totally passionate about holistic health: after unfortunately going through several traumas in 2013, Jess became ill with endometriosis, post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic fatigue. Reflexology, acupuncture, homeopathy and kinesiology put her back on the right track, and started a deep interest in the intricacies of the body, and holistic, complementary therapies.

5 years, 2 reflexology courses and goodness knows how many workshops, seminars, articles and books later, Cheltenham Wellness Clinic has arrived!

So you’re going to touch my feet?

Reflexology isn’t a foot rub or a nice treatment to have on a spa day. It’s a powerful method of encouraging your body to heal itself, be it after sustaining an injury, after surgery, or when faced with pain, illness or disease.

Jess won’t light candles, play whale music (unless you want her to) or talk to you in hushed tones. She’ll listen and understand your symptoms, will hone into what your body tells her, and treat you.

Jess has had especially good results with sports injuries, endometriosis, hormone support, hysterectomy recovery, migraine, arthritis, sleep disorders, depression and digestive issues.

Welcome to the website for the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain – one of the biggest and best ukulele festivals in the world, now in its SEVENTH uke-tastic year.

It’s hard to believe that we’re already planning for the 2016 festival – it seems like the dust has only just settled on the last one. A HUGE ENORMOUS THANK YOU to everyone who came in 2015 and helped to make it such a great success. You are the reason why we do it and you make it all worthwhile.

But enough of that! As always, we’re looking forward to another amazing event next year.

We’ll be bringing some of the most talented, most awesome, most funny, most fabulous, most unbelievable ukulele acts in the world to the beautiful festival town of Cheltenham in the heart of the Cotswolds; giving you the chance to learn something new or hone your talents at one of the wonderful workshops, or to buy a new uke or just lust over the fabulous instruments and more on offer at the stunning stalls. You can get out your ukes and play your socks off at one of the many jam sessions and the brilliant Big Busk, or show off your talents with an open mic performance. Best of all, you will find yourself at the centre of one of the grandest gatherings of the ukulele community, surrounded by friends old and new – hundreds of happy people all sharing in the ukulele love.

Last year, we sold out of tickets in a matter of weeks, so be sure to book tickets and workshops good and early to avoid disappointment

I love Chinese food. I love reading about it, watching it being made, cooking it myself and, of course, eating it. I could eat a Chinese every day of the week. During my nine year career in a non-descript London Soho office it was Chinese food that kept me sane. The highlight of the day was my lunch hour, when I would sneak off to a little Chinese restaurant in China Town and sit in quiet satisfaction as I ate freshly roasted duck and char sui on a steaming mound of white fluffy rice or slurp down prawn wontons served with udon noodles and fresh stock.

My side dish was always pak choi, as I knew that our family farm had supplied the restaurant only that week. Eating the pak choi kept me feeling connected with my family 150 miles away in the Vale of Evesham. Home is not where I lay my hat but what goes into my stomach. Sadly when I visited China Town at the beginning of 2009, the old haunt had gone to be replaced with an identkit McChinese aimed at the tourist market.

When I left the rat race in 2005 and came to Cheltenham to open 288 Bar & Wok my simple plan was to build a restaurant where I could eat with my wife, young daughter and friends. That meant no table clothes, no linen, no wine glasses, no fuss!

What was important was the food and that the restaurant was for everyone young or old. My continued aim is to serve delicious and great value food as quickly as our chefs can cook it. I hope that theres something for everybodys taste and wallet.

daffodil.png
18-20 Suffolk Parade, Cheltenham GL50 2AE, United Kingdom 1.03 mi

Now under new management

The Daffodil began life as Cheltenham’s first purpose built picture palace, opening its doors to the public on the 5th October 1922 with a continuous showing of the Hollywood silent movie Thunderclap starring Mary Carr.

With its contemporary Art Deco style and exuberant individuality The Daffodil was an instant success and despite its impressive 750 seat capacity screenings had to be increased from one showing per week to twice-daily to cope with visitor demand. The salubrious surroundings included a lounge area in the upper circle where visitors could relax before the main feature, perfume vending spritzers in the ladies powder room, and the country’s first ‘kissing seats’. These ingenious double seats, situated on the end of each isle, were specifically designed for courting couples and could be reserved in advance which needless to say proved extremely popular!

An extensive renovation followed during which many original features and fittings were restored and reinstated including the original projectionist machinery (now displayed in the upper circle) and a pair of “kissing seats” which now occupy pride of place in the Terrazzo mosaic foyer.
The Daffodil proudly re-opened its doors as one of Britain’s most unique and dramatic dining rooms on 14th February 1998 amid a flurry of excitement, red carpet and intense local interest.

Today the building is a civic award winning iconic Cheltenham Landmark as well as one of country’s finest surviving examples of original Art Deco cinema design. Mark and his business partner James McAlpine continue to restore and invest in this unique and beautiful building to ensure that The Daffodil remains as vibrant and stylish as when it opened nearly a century ago.

(FISG) was formed in 2007 by Cheltonians to protect the floral grandeur and amenity of Imperial Gardens, and from this group, Friends of Imperial Square Heritage and Conservation (FISHAC) was established in 2011 as a Registered Charity to raise funds to reinstate and repair the heritage and conservation assets in Imperial Square and Gardens.

The Trustees of FISHAC work in partnership with all stakeholders in this ‘people’s project’ to protect and further enhance the appearance, use and amenity of Imperial Square and Gardens. The Trustees are not paid in any way, and work on a pro bono basis for this community initiative.

The current appeal is raising funds to reinstate the railings lost to the war effort and the Trustees have made donations to cover the Charity’s initial costs and overheads. The Trustees are extremely grateful to the Charity’s supporters, who also donate their time, facilities, products and professional expertise to the Appeal, ensuring that the Charity’s direct costs are extremely low.

FISHAC’s proposals formed part of the 2011 Public Consultation on the Cheltenham Borough Council’s re-design of the landscape and infrastructure of this Town Centre Pleasure Garden.

Located in the ‘Suffolks’ – a stylish area of Montpellier well known for it’s social life and specialist shops – the Suffolk Arms pub is one of Cheltenham’s oldest and most traditional pubs. Established in 1824, originally as a Coach-House, the pub has long been a popular meeting place for the locals and visitors to the area. It’s also popular with ghost hunters as there is at least one resident tapping in the cellar…

This family friendly pub is run by Rita & Alan Meaden, who have been at the pub for the last 12 years. Redecoration has recently been completed  – with a function room / skittle alley / conservatory and small garden at the back.

The pub is proud of its warm atmosphere, selection of Real Ales, lagers, “And the BEST pint of Guinness in town!” says Pat O’Leary. Friendly staff and a genuinely friendly landlord are always around to help to make sure you enjoy your visit to the Suffolk Arms.

Based in the heart of Gloucestershire, we rescue and re-home unwanted and abandoned stray cats, dogs and small animals. Each year we care for around 1000 animals at a cost of £500,000 without the help of any Government funding.

We rely greatly on the generosity of animal lovers like you to ensure that our doors remain firmly open. Please take a moment to have a look around our site and, if you can, help us to help them.
