Bishops Cleeve Players began in 1955 with our very first production in 1956 of “The Hollow” by Agatha Christie and thereafter the Players typically staged two full-length productions each year.

Over the years we have presented a wide variety of productions, ranging from high drama to knock-about farce, from subtle comedy to Victorian Melodrama and a diverse range of one-act plays.  Many of these productions won awards over the years and in its 50th anniversary year won Best Play in the Gloucestershire One Act Play Festival.

With the growth in the range and sophistication of home entertainment, the world of live theatre has found it increasingly difficult to persuade audiences to leave the comforts of home to go to the theatre.  The modern audience also demands a fresh and dynamic standard and variety of entertainment.  So it was that the Players evolved again and developed a formula, which enables us to take an increasingly varied and eclectic programme of entertainment to the audience.

It is with great pleasure that I write to you as Principal of Cleeve School and Sixth Form Centre. My vision for the school is very simple: for it to provide the very best possible education and experience for all of its students so that they are thoroughly prepared for the next, very exciting stages of their lives. The highest standards and aspirations permeate everything we do.

As a parent myself, I know that all parents and carers want the very best for their children – and rightly so. As a school, we have a duty to provide all of our students with an exceptional learning experience, one that allows them to attain excellent examination results, but also one that prepares them for an increasingly challenging world beyond school, where the ability to keep learning and developing is imperative. Our programme of extra-curricular activities and enrichment is of the highest calibre and contributes towards the students thriving in all aspects of their growth and development; equally, our provision for the most able ensures that they progress through our flourishing Sixth Form Centre to the best universities, including Oxbridge.

Cleeve School offers consistently outstanding teaching and an innovative and highly personalised curriculum, where literacy and numeracy skills are secured as firm bedrocks. The school provides a safe and stimulating environment, where mutual respect threads through the celebrated ethos of care, support and guidance. In preparing students for the world beyond school, we firmly believe in high standards of dress and attitude, so that good manners, tolerance and understanding underpin everything we do. Tradition is important – and we hold on to our traditions and high expectations, whilst also thoroughly embracing innovation and a 21st century approach to learning.

Lose yourself in the distinct luxury of Ellenborough Park, a sumptuous Cotswold manor house hotel in The Cotswolds, situated on the outskirts of Cheltenham Spa. The main house of the estate dates back to the 15th Century, when it was erected from iconic Cotswold stone, steeping the manor in layers of history and intriguing tales. Ellenborough Park is a quintessentially British destination, with a unique streak of individuality inspired by Lady Ellenborough herself, Jane Digby. Jane married Lord Ellenborough at the height of her fame as a dazzling character who took 19th Century English society by storm with her striking beauty and scandalous behaviour. Grand but without pretentiousness, Ellenborough Park has become synonymous with country retreats, romantic breaks, unforgettable weddings and expertly-executed conferences.

You can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome with us whatever your age, background or origin. Our congregation covers a wide age range and a variety of backgrounds.

Our Church

We do small church excellently. By small church we don’t necessarily mean small in numbers.

By small church we mean Christians gathered together in the service of Christ knowing one another as friends, supporting one another as brothers and sisters and learning together as Christ’s followers.

Think about us as like the Philippian Church!

The Three Key Features Of Our Church

The three key features characterise Harvest Field Church:

  • A family atmosphere where each member’s contribution is valued.
  • Inspired, heart-felt music provides the preparation or setting for a continual expression of adoration for the Father and joy in His presence.
  • A hunger to know God and the Truth revealed in His Word.

I love Chinese food. I love reading about it, watching it being made, cooking it myself and, of course, eating it. I could eat a Chinese every day of the week. During my nine year career in a non-descript London Soho office it was Chinese food that kept me sane. The highlight of the day was my lunch hour, when I would sneak off to a little Chinese restaurant in China Town and sit in quiet satisfaction as I ate freshly roasted duck and char sui on a steaming mound of white fluffy rice or slurp down prawn wontons served with udon noodles and fresh stock.

My side dish was always pak choi, as I knew that our family farm had supplied the restaurant only that week. Eating the pak choi kept me feeling connected with my family 150 miles away in the Vale of Evesham. Home is not where I lay my hat but what goes into my stomach. Sadly when I visited China Town at the beginning of 2009, the old haunt had gone to be replaced with an identkit McChinese aimed at the tourist market.

When I left the rat race in 2005 and came to Cheltenham to open 288 Bar & Wok my simple plan was to build a restaurant where I could eat with my wife, young daughter and friends. That meant no table clothes, no linen, no wine glasses, no fuss!

What was important was the food and that the restaurant was for everyone young or old. My continued aim is to serve delicious and great value food as quickly as our chefs can cook it. I hope that theres something for everybodys taste and wallet.

Originally founded in 1992 as Open Door at Christmas, we gradually expanded and developed our work, taking the new name of Cheltenham Open Door and becoming both a registered charity and limited company.  We have been operating from our Grosvenor Street base since 1998.

Cheltenham Open Door supports vunerable, disadvantaged and lonely people.  We are working to relieve poverty, hardship and social or emotional distress.

Our guests are men and women who have been deprived of the comforts and security most of us take for granted and we offer them hospitality, warmth, food and somewhere to relax.

Some lost jobs through injury or sickness and are not fit to work again.  Some read and write only with great difficulty.   Some are coping with mental health issues.  Some are in a programme to try to get off alcohol or drugs.  Most come from broken homes, were in care as children or have experienced broken relationships.  Some are sleeping rough or are among the hidden homeless in a temporary hostel or sleeping on a friends floor.

We do not judge and we make no charge for any of our services

Purslane is a small, independent restaurant in the heart of Cheltenham which specialises in the freshest, sustainably-caught seafood from British waters combined with the best local produce the Cotswolds has to offer. We opened in the Summer of 2012 and our menu is seafood-led, though carnivores and vegetarians will always find delicious options to choose from. The fish we use is sourced from small, inshore day-boat fishermen who use handlines and nets off the coast of Cornwall. They don’t damage the seabed by trawling and they land their fish on the same day it’s caught so it can be fresh on your plate the very next day.

Remember the men of Cheltenham who gave their lives for you in the Great War 1914 – 1919.   If they were strangers to one another here in their common home, they served and wrought and died in many lands near and far as a Band of Brothers.   Learn from them so to live and die that, when you have followed them and are no more seen, you may, like them, be remembered and regretted.”   Inscriptions on the Cheltenham War Memorial.

Hesters Way, which includes the council wards of Hesters Way, Springbank, St Peter’s and St Marks, is amongst the 20% most deprived areas in Britain. It has a population of 15,583 (Maiden) and includes the highest concentration of social housing in Gloucestershire.

It was originally built in the 1950s and 1960s to house people working for GCHQ and local engineering companies.
Changes that took place over the following 30 years adversely affected the area and reflected changes in society in general. Owner occupation, structural changes in the economy and the make up of the housing stock and subsequent housing allocations have lead to a concentration of relative poverty in this area of predominantly social housing.

By the late 1980s the contrast between Hesters Way and the rest of the town was evident. By the mid 1990s there was recognition that the area had become a serious issue for Cheltenham as a whole.

In 1984 a group of local enthusiasts joined those words together, and suddenly musicians famous from LP sleeves were playing at the Queen’s Hotel. Amongst them: Archie Shepp, Max Roach, Teddy Edwards, Red Rodney, Sheila Jordan, Kenny Drew, Ray Bryant, Yakata Shiina, Kirk Lightsey and Jean Toussaint.

Also and always, the best of British players: Ronnie Scott, Bobby Wellins, Don Weller, Humphrey Lyttelton, Pete King, Tony Kofi, Ambulance, Jim Hart – a huge list goes on.

Cheltenham Jazz participation in the Music Festival led the way to the (now entirely separate) annual Jazz Festival. And CJ continues all year through, at two ideal venues: The Everyman Studio Theatre – a perfect, intimate listening space, and a room in the elegant surroundings of the Victory Club in Lypiatt Road Cheltenham with comfortable seating for up to a hundred people.

We mix London and international band gigs, with featured A* leaders supported by a fine, rhythm section, currently Dave Newton (piano), Tom Hill (bass) and Simon Radford (drums).

One of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire’s foremost chamber choirs

Jubilate draws its members from Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Cotswolds. The Conductor and Artistic Director is Ian Higginson and the choir rehearses at Francis Close Hall, University of Gloucestershire, Swindon Road, Cheltenham on Monday evenings from 7.30 – 9.30pm

Experienced singers, particularly those with good sight-reading ability, are always welcome. The choir’s repertoire encompasses sacred and secular music from the 16th century to the present day. Jubilate has sung in many of the country’s cathedrals and abbeys, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, St. Giles, Edinburgh, Bath Abbey, Westminster Abbey and Hereford Cathedral.
It has enjoyed highly successful tours to Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Liverpool, Chester and in August 2007 to Paris where the choir gave a Recital in Eglise Saint-Séverin and sang Mass in Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris.

In January 2008 the choir will be making a recording of Christmas music in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

“The chamber choir Jubilate and their conductor Ian Higginson put together a programme containing music from Purcell to Porter which showed tremendous versatility. Accompanied or a capella everything was first class, and with the cathedral’s acoustic perfect for this sort of ensemble, we were treated to a musical feast…… Three beautiful motets by Stanford stood out, but Porter’s Let’s Do It and an arrangement of Teddy Bear’s Picnic were also first class…. Add to that a glorious Kyrie from Vierne’s Messe Solonnelle and that was plenty proof that this choir are at home in any form of music….”

In September 2006 at the suggestion of my young colleague Oliver Lock I founded the Gloucestershire Youth Players for young actors over the age of 16. The group was designed to complement the Gloucestershire Young Shakespeare Theatre, or GYST ( the only UK based company for 12-16 year olds performing solely Shakespeare, uncut and unprompted) which I began in 2005. We are an entirely voluntary-aided company dependent upon ticket sales and donations for our survival.

GYP’s aims are to bring invigorating versions of Shakespeare’s texts to audiences in and around Gloucestershire. The focus is to give young people a springboard into the brilliance of one of the greatest playwrights in the English language by producing these seminal texts with an ensemble based company of serious young performers. We attempt to make what we do accessible and imaginative in its interpretation whilst keeping as faithfully as possible to the text. As one critic remarked in 2008: “GYP offers genuine opportunities to young actors and actresses to expand their knowledge of, and confidence in drama.

Welcome to Holy Apostles’ Pre-school, a fun and friendly pre-school located in the grounds of Holy Apostles’ Primary School on Battledown Approach in Cheltenham.

At Holy Apostles’ Pre-school Cheltenham, we believe that all children should have a safe and nurturing environment to enjoy learning, develop key skills and make new friends – and through a variety of activities and play sessions, we pride ourselves on providing a place where your child can go from strength to strength.
