Petition to make Coronation Square an alcohol free zone

4 posts in this topic

We the undersigned petition the council to post "no alcohol" signs in Coronation Square, West Cheltenham.

There is a problem with people hanging about in the area drinking alcohol and being generally unpleasant to shoppers and passers by. This is offensive, contributes to the poor reputation of the area and is a disincentive for people to shop there.

There are notices up in various parts of the borough saying that alcohol must not be consumed there. It would be a very good idea to post such notices around the area and get the police to enforce this policy.

This ePetition runs from 08/09/2017 to 03/05/2018.

Would I be right in thinking that it is illegal to consume alcohol in these public places, whether there are signs on display or not? There are people who might believe, or pretend to believe, that the absence of a sign implies otherwise.

Getting the police to enforce the policy would be another matter, since they cry under-funding when asked to act on just about anything nowadays. Perhaps you should ask them for a public meeting to discuss this and other matters. Wow, you have two actual police officers on your local policing team, while we have just five PCSOs...

I see that Hesters Way's two current councillors are Liberal Democrats. So while it's great that you are making use of digital media to promote your political campaign, and a lot more councillors, existing and hopeful, should be following your example, are you more of a paper candidate than a serious contender? Nothing wrong with that, I'd do the same, though I know I wouldn't have a chance of winning, just to shame the real contenders into putting their views up for discussion. But you might, if you haven't already, let those local agencies and activists know about these boards (a lot of people don't), so they can contribute to the debate as well, if they want to.
