Spit hoods to be trialled in Gloucestershire

9 posts in this topic

The use of spit hoods in custody suites is expected to be trialled by Gloucestershire Police later this year.

The Police Federation, said police need to take "active precautions" to protect themselves from spitting or biting.

However the use of spit hoods has proven controversial, with human rights organisation Liberty calling them "cruel and degrading".

I don't agree with Liberty. If you don't want to wear one do't spit at our police.

Hi

Would have been useful other day. Some hoodlum spat in my face other day on way to ASDA (Charles St) then walked on as if nothing had happened. Seems because I walk a specialised stick I must be a target for those unsociable neanderthals.

Was a time I wold have just smashed him one. Now it seems appropriate to spit at elderly people walking with an aid.

G'day Paul,

I don't usually comment on any of the LOCAL political posts but on this I believe that I have a good knowledge of the subject.

I was a Prison officer for 22+ years, in NSW and rose to the rank of Deputy Superintendent.

I can tell you that there is nothing more disgusting that having some "GROT" gob in your face.

I had it happen once and the git never did it again, as he quickly learnt the error of his ways.

I believe that police and any other public servants and members of the public should be allowed to go about their duty or life, without an assault being carried out on them, especially in this cowardly manner.

If a SPIT HOOD stops repeat offenders of this disgusting habit then put them on, it in no way stops their human rights, as they have forgone those with their actions.

OH!! AND WHEN YOU PUT THEM ON, DO THEM UP TIGHT!!!.

Nobby:hehe:

Hi

Totally agree Nobby.

My late uncle was a prison officer too. Served in Gloucester prison back in the day.

You wouldn't want to cross him, I saw him knock a guy down with one punch for hitting his wife(the guy's) in a pub.

There was a time a couple decades ago when I wore my biker's leathers and could walk without a stick. Never had this problem back then. Often the ne'er do wells would avoid me in the street, No chance of that now :(

Thanks

Paul Harries

Will the "spit hoods" be used only on those who have previously spat at police officers? I don't agree with it being used on all suspects - let's remember that people who are arrested are 'suspects' until charged, and defendants until proven guilty. No problem with them being used on those who have a track record of spitting at officers, or against those who are seriously disorderly at the time of arrest.
