Beaucoco is an internet business selling ethical jewellery sourced from carefully identified producer groups around the world. We are based in Stroud Gloucestershire.
Our first range is beautifully crafted by local people on the remote tropical island of Rodrigues, 650km east of Mauritius in the central Indian Ocean. The jewellery is based on local raw materials; discarded coconut shell is selected and skilfully transformed using sterling silver and semi-precious stones. The design is infused with the wild natural habitat and simple life on the tiny island, creating a unique and eclectic range.
Beaucoco's commitment to ethical trading helps to develop creative and remunerative work for disabled Creoles on an island with high unemployment. Experienced designer Bettina Bunce established her background in fair trade before it became fashionable, working around the world for major organisations, including Oxfam. For this first range Bettina lived in Rodrigues with her young family for one year and worked with a local producer group in need of design inspiration to complement their excellent craft skills. Careco (formerly Craft-Aid) was set up on the island in 1989; deaf and otherwise disabled workers usually join from a Special Learning Centre on the site.
