William Tyndale

Gloucestershire

Born at Stinchcombe near Dursley. After studying at Oxford he returned to Gloucestershire and began his great work of translating The Bible from Greek into English, so that ordinary people could understand it. For this great service to mankind he was persecuted by the church authorities as a heretic, fled to Belgium, and was executed by being burned at the stake.
