Sir Jimmy Young - Broadcaster and Singer

Born in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, original name Leslie Ronald Young. The son of a miner, he was an excellent boxer and rugby player, turning down an offer of a professional career with Wigan rugby league club. In the war years, Jimmy Young was in the R.A.F. In 1949 he joined the BBC, and his singing career peaked in 1955 as he becomes the first UK artist to top the NME chart with successive releases: hits included Unchained Melody and Too Young.
