Sir Edward Jenner
Edward Jenner, a doctor in Berkeley carried out his famous experiment on young James Phipps ( 8 years old ) by inserting pus from a cowpox pustule that was taken from the hands of local milkmaid Sarah Helmes into an incision on his arm. Local folklore suggested that milkmaids that had cowpox never suffered smallpox.
