Cheltenham is probably one of the most complete Regency towns in Britain today. It sprang from an Anglo Saxon village well over a thousand years ago. It became a market town in 1226. In the 18th century, medicinal waters were discovered and by the end of the century it was one of the countries leading Spa towns. By the end of the 18th century it's hey day as a spa was over, and many of the Regency buildings the visitor can see today were built in this period.
Today, Cheltenham is famous for it's race course, literary festivals and fine shops..
