Gloucester Cross

The centre of Gloucester is known as The Cross .From the 13th century a large stone cross marked the meeting point of the 4 principle streets . This cross was removed in 1751 " for the better convenience of carriages " . St Michael's Tower ( 14th century ) stands right on the cross. From here streets radiate out in the directions of the compass towards the old city gates so it is a logical place to start. The pedestrianisation of the centre is now complete, making walking the streets a much more pleasant experience.

Nearby towns include Cheltenham, Stroud, and Bristol. Gloucester has good motorway links to Birmingham and the North and South to London. Before the motorway network was built, anyone travelling to Wales, had to travel through Gloucester.
The four streets radiating from Gloucester cross are Westgate Street, Eastgate Street, Northgate Street and Southgate street. If you have a high speed connection to the web, we now have a broadband section that has streaming video clips of Gloucester. See also Virtual Gloucestershire
