gloucester history preface

During the iron age ( pre Roman ) the Severn Valley was occupied by many small farms and settlements . When the Roman army came to the area the original fort was built ( about 40 AD ) at Kingsholm , now famous for Gloucester Rugby Football Club .
At about 60 AD this fort was dismantled and the new fort built over looking the River crossing at Gloucester , or Glevum . One of the huge oak timbers from the gates can be seen under Boots the Chemist in Eastgate St . You can still see the original street pattern today .
