Has anyone seen my brother-in-law, Thomas Francis Digby, who lived in Gloucester 'way back? He'd be about 64 by now. Lost touch with him decades ago in our world travels -- we're currently in Canada. Maybe we can re-make a family connection ... even if this isn't exactly the right place for setting up a message. But we've tried all the North American search engines. Give is an e-mail, Tom, or one from your family. Thanks for listening. Geof Gray-Cobb ggray@junctionnet.com

I am researching my genealogy and in particular Hannah Cooke who was fortunate to have been given a free trip to Australia by his majesty King George III. In order to arrange this free trip she was involved in a burglary in a dwelling house of Pointz Cryer, at Siston about 1813.

I would appreciate any information concerning the locations mentioned above and in particular if the dwelling house is still in existence. Also if anyone is also interested in the Cooke genealogy linked into the family at this time.

Just wanted to comment that I very much enjoyed this site! I am tracing my family history. It seems that my ancestors originated in Gloucester. Charles Hoare was supposedly the sheriff of Gloucester in the 1500's-1600's. He died in 1638 and his wife (Joanna Hinksman(?) and children emmigrated to America (Braintree, Mass.) I'm an avid Anglophile, and now I would love to come and visit your beautiful city. Is there any place that would have historical records for the period of my ancestors?

Thanks again.

Comments:

On Wednesday 10th November at 7:30pm St Luke’s Methodist Church, Stroud Road, Gloucester is hosting a concert by ‘Neva-Russicum’, a singing group from St Petersburg. (Tickets are £3.50 each and will be available at the door).

This vocal ensemble is a Russian 'a capella’ (voice only) group comprising six talented soloists, who aim to promote traditional and contemporary Russian religious songs, as a part of the cultural heritage of Europe, to a broader international public. All the members of the vocal group are professional singers with several years experience. Their first tour took place in 1992 to Germany and Switzerland and their circle of friends and supporters has developed through successful subsequent tours in Germany, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland.

In Russia the choir members sing as soloists in various parishes or work as church choir conductors in the service of the Russian Orthodox church as well as in the Philharmonic Society and Opera. The preserving of the original traditions of the Russian vocal school as well as the encouragement of young singers in the field of Christian music are their principal aims. A special concern is to show the continuity of liturgical music from early times to today. In addition to the religious pieces, their repertoire includes traditional Russian folk songs.

Having heard a sister group from St Petersburg last year, I know that we are in for an evening of very high quality music.

We are hoping to give the Russians a hearty welcome and would truly like to fill our church on this occasion.

Please come along you will be most welcome.

Comments: Hello...

I am looking for information on my 4th great grandfather, Thomas WATHEN of Gloucestershire. (I don't have an exact birth year but am assuming it was 1740-1760 time frame. He enlisted under Lord Cornwallis, the British General. In May, 1780 he was at the capture of Charleston, South Carolina in the American Revolution. He was made a prisoner of war and learned the shoemaking trade.

He was later exchanged and went from New York to Shelburne Nova Scotia with 7000 other Loyalists in April 1783. He died in Nova Scotia in the 1800's after having married twice and fathering 11 children. His surname was changed from WATHEN to WORTHEN after his arrival in NS.

I have extensive information on his descendants which I would be happy to exchange. I am interested in finding out his parents names, date of birth, siblings etc.

Thanks for any help you may have. I may be contacted at the mailing address below or at the following two email address' listed.

Sincerely,

Heather Leighton Waddingham

I'm an Australian who would like to get hold of a clever device from Gloucester called "The Litter Picker", made by Mecanaids. Can someone please give me their email address or phone/fax number? Thanks...GT

Most of the entries seem to be about people who have left the UK. Mine is the exact opposite. I've lived in SA for a number of years and would love to return to somewhere like Churchdown.

My ambition is to work to keep myself in a modest sort of lifestyle, possibly working with Roman Catholic religious in some kind of outreach work. I'm a lay person, can type, do a lot of graphics on my PC, don't drive, enjoy visiting and spending time with the elderly, especially those with Alzheimer's. Is there public transport in Churchdown? Not such a silly question, because there's none here. Of any use to any RC hospital or outreach programme? (I have found that people tend to become a bit suspicious when confronted with someone who doesn't just want money.) Work at a convent would be ideal.

Regards, Anne
