Marcus Nerva Emporer

A SIX-ton block of concrete has been lowered on to a foundation in Gloucester's Southgate Street pedestrian area.
It forms the plinth for the statue of Marcus Nerva , the Roman emperor who made Gloucester a city nearly 2,000 years ago.

This morning (Sunday 23rd June ) the life-size bronze of Nerva, mounted on his horse, was delivered and fixed to the plinth to create the first equestrian statue of a Roman emperor to be set up in Britain in modern times.
A time capsule is filled with argon gas to prevent decay and contains newspapers, books, poetry and many other items ranging from a Gloucester rugby shirt to a pair of Marks and Spencer underpants was buried under the plinth.
The Gloucestershire Portal was there, and we can now show you some photos and a video clip of the occasion..
