Longsmith Street Gloucester
This site is Sponsored by Gloucestershire Web Hosting and Gloucestershire Self Storage Group

Longsmith St. ( previously old smith st. ) refers to one of Gloucester's most important industries during medieval time. Good quality iron was produced here during the reign of Edward the Confessor. Iron ore was mined from Robinswood hill ( now a park ) but the majority would have come from the forest of Dean.
King Henry 1st had many implements, including mattocks and spades for his expedition to Ireland in 1173 and in 1242 Henry 3rd ordered 10.000 horseshoes and 100,000 nails to be delivered in twenty days.
All sorts of associated traders could be found here including shield makers and locksmiths
Nearby towns include Cheltenham, Stroud, and Bristol. Gloucester has good motorway links to Birmingham and the North and South to London. Before the motorway network was built, anyone travelling to Wales, had to travel through Gloucester.
