Hucclecote
Hucclecote is a suburb of Gloucester City not far from Churchdown.
our of the few surviving traditional hay meadows in Gloucestershire make up this nature reserve. As recently as fifty years ago, such fields were still a feature of the countryside of the Severn Vale, but since then, agricultural "improvements" by ploughing, re seeding and spraying has taken its toll of these ancient sites. Additional pressures of housing and motorway constructions have also destroyed many meadows, including some in Hucclecote.
The site is still managed by old fashioned methods which over hundreds of years have encouraged the colourful variety of flowers and butterflies seen today. The hay is cut in mid-summer to allow the plants time to flower and seed, and then the fields are grazed by cattle throughout the autumn.
There is a nature trail which starts at Lobleys Drive
