Brunswick Road Gloucester

To the left you can see the remains of Greyfriars. Unfortunately these few walls are all that remain, but a few feet away the visitor will find St Mary De Crypt.

This fine old Church is now in a pleasant spot right in the centre of the city of Gloucester. The yard has been tidied up and a wonderful stone seat, carved by local stone masons, celebrating the history of Gloucester is now on display here.

he earliest recorded church on this site was around 1140 and known as the Church of the blessed Mary. The present Church is well worth a visit.

The fifteenth century nave contains an early renaissance style pulpit from which George Whitfield preached his first sermon in 1736.In the north transept are 16th century brasses to Alderman John Cooke and his wife, founders of the Crypt School.

The Crypt School, one of Gloucester's two grammar Schools for Boys started life here
