Over the weekend i found a had a tyre on the car almost flat, pumped it up and following day same again. Phoned Kwikfit, can have it done 2 days wait due to work. Rang a couple more "Make an appointment" Found Tyre and Battery Co. in Yellow Pages, Phoned and was told "Bring it in". Drove in, Tyre off, repaired, other three tyres checked and on my way 30 mins approx. Got a quote for new battery £27 cheaper than Halfords (same model).

They are situated on Hemmingsdale Road, opposite the Llanthony Priory and i would have no hesitation in recommending this Firm.

Getting a job done promptly and efficiently these days is becoming rarer.

Another good one is HiQ, down Bristol Road, Gloucester (next to Pets at Home). I went there today and got a new tyre (145x13) for £24, including valve and balance.

HiQ damaged my newly refurbished alloy wheel with their machine. I did complain and got a call from one of their representatives, but they never followed it up further.

24 quid for a tyre is cheap, but I would rather have a quality tyre on - after all it's the only thing keeping you on the road.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with HiQ. I've used them many times, and never found any fault. I always buy budget radials, and have never had any fault with any tyre. All tyres have to be of a certain quality in order to be sold in this country. A mechanic told me that budget tyres are made of softer rubber, so they don't last as long as others, but there is nothing wrong with their grip.

The only tyre-related thing that actually worries me is the number of pieces of tyre that you see by the side of the road, especially on motorways. I assume that these are from remoulds that have failed. They usually seem to be lorry tyres. Now, that's frightening.

Not sure there are any remoulds these days, are there? I think most of the bits are from tyres that break up and I'm sure that most are from lorries. Frightening when you think of the loads they have on them.

As for budget tyres, I now use them all the time. I had the same advice from my friend who owns a repair workshop as well as tyre fitting. Not sure that I would feel the same if I drove a high performance car but have done thousands of miles on them in a normal family car. Alloys, I have looked at various newish cars but although they look good, I prefer to steer clear of them with the roads in the state they are in. Steel wheels do cope better with the potholes and with a decent plastic wheel cover they look quite alright.

The cost of tyres has definitely come down over the years, though. I was paying about £20 for budget radials 20 years ago.

I can distinctly remember three star petrol being 32 pence per gallon at a Jet station on the A38 that my mother used to use on the way to and from Berrow. I must have been 10 or 11 at the time.

Went out 8.30. this am. to get Haircut,(cost £10. rememenber when it was 1/6d.) came back an hour later, parked up and had breakfast, came out, lashing down with Rain, Flat tyre. Luckily i have one of those inflators that works of the ciggy lighter.
Pumped up the tyre, got dry clothes on and went again to Tyre and Battery Co. on Hemmingsdale Rd.. Within 20 mins tyre repaired, luckily the pice of metal did not ruin the tyre, As before they were on to the job within seconds of me calling in.
I cannot praise their work rates too highly.

"0 mins to change a tyre! I watched all 4 being changed on a car last week in about 4 seconds. The did seem to have a large staff all just sitting and waiting for a customer though.

Know what you mean, when i lived in Bristol i had all 4 wheeels removed whilst i was in Debenhams. They must have been very quick., also they must have been Bricklayers by trade as they left me 4 bricks.
