The Chequers... Cheapest Chips in Gloucester ?

How is it that, the chip shops across the UK pushed up the price of chips, by stating that the price of potatoes went up because at that time, there was a drought. But when the droughts have gone and the crops recovered, the chip prices NEVER went back down ? Also the cost of Cod went up, due to a cod shortage, which has since recovered, but still the prices NEVER went back down ?

But since then, the prices have risen steadily, with two portions of fish & chips, now costing only just under £10.

With the cost of fish and chips going up these past few years and getting fed up of having to pay just under a tenner, for two portions of fish & chips, from chip shops around Gloucester and getting little change back.

I changed over, to the help yourself salad bars at Morrison's and then bought chicken thighs, or sausages, or sausage rolls, to go with it. which I must admit was a refreshing change from fish & chips. ALSO a lot cheaper too.

But as time went by, I still craved the occasional fish and chip treat, now and then, I began eating fish and chips less, as the prices have become extortionate. However, one day my next door neighbour asked me if I would give her a lift somewhere and on the way back, suggested we stop off at the Chequers Chippy. I wasn't that keen as I hadn't been in there for years, also because of the rising cost of fish and chips.

Anyway, we popped in and they are under new management, I was surprised to see that they offered OAP portions of fish & chips( Not that I'm an OAP and also not just for OAP's ) for ONLY £2.30

The fish was slightly smaller portion, but was ALL fish and NOT a big hunk of batter, with little fish and big hollow hunks of batter falling off the ends. The portion of chips was quite good a size too.

Pies are selling for ONLY £1.80 whereas other places they're nearly £3.00 each.

Are the Chequers Chippy the ONLY ones selling the cheapest chips in Gloucester ?


How can chip shops justify the high cost of fish and chips ? If the Chequers can sell fish and chips cheaper at about half price, why can't the others ?

Well I know where I will be be buying ALL my fish & chips from, from now on.

Yes, that does sound very cheap.

I would point out that cod really is expensive even for the chip shops to buy because world stocks are low. Did anyone see that Horizon programme last night? It was about the oceans and falling fish stocks. In the 1850s off the east coast of America (the Boston area, I think), individual fishermen using rod and line are recorded as catching an average of at least 400 huge cod per day! I think that the commentary stated that 50,000 tons of cod per year was landed. Now it's only 4,000 tons using modern technology and huge nets.

Are the Chequers Chippy the ONLY ones selling the cheapest chips in Gloucester ?

I would not have believed they were still going.

I remember the original owner's (whose Surname, currently alludes me)in the 1950/60's.

My sister was great mates with their youngest daughter, as they both went to Ribston.

I used to call in for a bag of chips on my way home from Williams & James, during my Apprenticeship (no money in those days for a piece of Fish as well) .

Are the chips from The Chequer's any good, I don't think I have had chips from there. Are they better than Hare Lane and Danny Dyke's?
The chips from Hare Lane used to be really good, although they still taste nice. Recently, I have noticed that they don't wash the chips and they are gritty.

Well, I think the Chequers chips are good, if not, then I wouldn't go there ? Not heard of Danny Dyke's chippy , where is that ? However, I fancied some chips Sunday night and tried Ruddy's in Hucclecote , for the first time in a few months and although their fish & chips were nice. ( They cooked 2 fresh cod as I waited ) Cod & chips twice, cost me exactly a tenner ! Which is why I've now switched to the Chequers, but which unfortunately doesn't open on Sundays.

I think you may be mistaken Nobby ? As I recall Gregory's fish & chip shop, as always being on the corner of St James Street, situated opposite the India House pub. Unless of course, I am mistaken and he ran the Chequers chippy at some stage ?

The Chequers chippy was next to the Chequers pub, which was pulled down earlier this year and they've recently finished building houses on the site.

In the early 1980's the owners of the Chequers chippy, began staying open right into the early hours, through to 3.00am or 4.00am, in the morning, this attracted, loud noisy crowds of folks on their way home from nightclubs and also bikers and residents soon complained about lack of sleep, due to all the noise of party revellers, cars and motorbikes revving up and fights breaking out, outside the chippy, also anti-social behaviour, as residents front gardens were being used as toilets and fighting arenas and cars were damaged and flowerbeds were being trashed.

Eventually, the residents took the chippy to court, in a bid to stop them opening into the early hours. But a legal loophole was discovered, that due to the Chequers being one of the oldest chippys, which had been trading since, if not before the wartime. The council had no legal powers to stop the Chequers from trading into the early hours.

Residents to the left of the Chequers, that had been suffering at the hands of yobs and drunken party revellers, soon put their houses up for sale and the house next door to the Chequers was bought by the chippy, which then rented it out to their staff. Eventually the chippy was sold on, but never stayed open into the very early mornings again. It was soon taken over by a Pakistani gentleman and his wife from Swindon, they ran it for a few years, before selling it to an old couple, husband and wife, she had a hunchback and both looked very unhappy.

I was told recently that the old guy, started being rude to his customers and complained bitterly, if they parked on the chippy's drive and used the newsagents at the front. The shops had an unwritten agreement that they'd let cars park on each others drives, to use either shop. But the old guy at the chippy, got so annoyed that he started complaining and as a result, drove away all the customers.

So now the Chequers chippy's being run by a married couple from Portugal, but only getting a trickle of passing trade, compared to how busy the shop used to be in the past and one of the reasons being that the Chequers pub has been pulled down, so they have lost what little passing trade they had left. Hence one of the reasons that they're selling the CHEAPEST CHIPS AND BURGERS in Gloucester.

Unfortunately, the Portugese couple don't seem to have much, if any experience of running the chip shop and so, trade is trickling in at this time and because of this their opening hours are

Monday to Friday

11.30am .... 2.00pm

4.30.PM .... 10.00pm

Saturday 11.30 am .... 10.00pm

Still the CHEAPEST fish & chips in Gloucester that I've found.

Their Youngest Daughter was great mates with my youngest sister. They both attended Ribston and then worked together for the County Council.

I would regularly call into there for a bag of scrumps, with my mates, during the 60's.

We tend to use good old "Oven Chips". No mess and smelly oil to contend with.
