Does anyone know who makes and/or sells the type of large, static barbecue that you find at picnic sites in the Forest of Dean, etc.? I've tried Googling various words, but all I get is adverts for ordinary barbecues that you might have in your garden.

No, the type I mean is all steel, and really large and strong and vandal-proof. It would presumably be made by a forge.

Not too sure what type you mean Kay, what do you want it for? It might be that you will have to get a small engineering company to make one up to your specification. Alternately contact the authority who has set up the BBQ site you have seen.

A cheap portable alternative would be half an oil drum. we had one in Gloucester and cooked for 120 people at Blakeney. (? spelling). I replaced the drum years later in Wimborne and left it there, It's not the thing for a garden though.

I was just hoping to find out who supplied the type of barbecue that is found at some picnic areas. I'm assuming that they probably cost around £1,000. I have noticed that there is a growing problem of single-use barbecues being used in Gloucester Park, damaging the grass in patches all over the place. I was going to suggest to the City Council that they should have a permanent barbecue installed, and that I could sponsor it, but I was wondering what I was letting myself in for.

Before you say anything take a photo of the ones you have seen and call in at a small engineering work and ask them for a rough estimate. £1000 is a huge amount for a simple object.

We have the type of B.B.Q. that you describe at the majority of beaches in QLD, Kay.

Majority of them have Stainless Steel tops, with metal front doors, which have brick built surrounds.

They have a coin slot, to pay for the gas used, which covers the expense to the Council.

I can't find them on the net but next time I am at the beach, I will note the makers name and post them on this site.

I all likelyhood they will be OZmade but they may be able to give a U.K. equivalent, if approached.

I've never seen a coin slot one Nobby and I could imagine a gas BBQ costing in excess of £1000 but then I have never ever thought of using or buying a gas BBQ. I learned to cook in Africa and we couldn't even buy charcoal there in the 70s, (you can now). When I started to cook over here we just used wood and when we cooked in the Forest of Dean we used to send the kids off into the woods to collect fallen branches. The highlight of our BBQ was later in the day, we would have stopped in Blakeney where there was a REAL bakers. A couple of fresh loaves and some butter. The loaves would be cut in door-steps and toasted over the embers.

FANTASTIC! Sorry to go off thread re. where to buy one but it brought back a lot of great memories.

I'm not thinking about a barbecue with a brick surround, Nobby. It's 100% steel. There's no source for the gas either.

There is one on Robinswood Hill, so I'll see if it has a maker's name on it. I do know that if you get a item made up especially for you by a forge, it will cost twice what you'd pay for a ready-made item.
