LITTER picks, a major carnival, a top gardening event, and a celebration of royalty – Kingsway aims to have it all in 2012.

A group of volunteers are gearing up to "bring the whole community together" for the year, but need more help in doing so.

Kingsway Residents Association was formed following the creation of the estate, and every month between 15 and 20 people get together to formulate worthwhile activities for the area.

Already in the pipeline for 2012 are a host of events.

One major event to put the estate on the map is Kingsway in Bloom, which will take place in the summer and culminate in a judging event in mid-August.

The association also wants to plan an event for the Queen's Jubilee to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne, in the first week of June.

Gloucestershire County Council has already waived the fee for road closures so residents can stage street parties.

Following concerns about rubbish, the group is also aiming to stage regular litter-pick sessions in Kingsway.

It wants to gauge how many residents would be interested in getting involved. And it wants some sort of volunteer presence at the Gloucester Carnival, which is taking place in July.

Barry Kirby, chair of the residents association, said: "We are always looking for more people to get involved, we typically get from 16 to 19 people turn up for each meeting but it is open to anyone in Kingsway. We are planning a lot for 2012 but want to make it as inclusive as possible.

"The more volunteers that come and help out, the better."

Kingsway resident Paul Tavin, 59, said: "It sounds like a good situation to be in this early in the year – it's time we started to do more community events, Quedgeley do a lot at the moment and it helps people get to know each other."
