TRADERS have welcomed news to bring change to a "dangerous" road crossing.

But people in Hewlett Road are concerned that they could lose business while the work is being carried out.

Shire Hall announced the work this week and said it would improve the area for motorists and pedestrians.
Mario Evyeniou, owner of George and Son barber shop, said: "We've been waiting for this for a long time and have warned that the crossing was unsafe.
"I'm right behind all this work and I don't want to sound like I'm not in favour of it, but I don't know why it has to take this long.
"It will definitely have an impact on business because a lot of my customers drive here."
The announcement came as a woman was knocked over by a car on the crossing on Friday.
She was in her 30s and received injuries described as "not serious".
Londis spokesman Shantilal Kotecha said: "It's a good thing that the work will be done.
"It will effect business, of course, but we don't know how much and only time will tell."
The crossing is close to the All Saints Road roundabout and the road will be closed all day and night between January 23 and February 3 to allow the upgrade.
Then resurfacing of Hewlett Road, between London Road and All Saints Road, will start on February 6 and be completed by February 14.
It will see a new kerb created on both sides, the central island lengthened, and improvements made to the paving and footway levels.
Stephen Burden, Gloucestershire Highways Manager, said: "Local residents and motorists will be faced with some disruption, but the benefits of a new pedestrian crossing and a new road surface will be welcomed.
"I would ask for everyone's patience during the planned period of work."
Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for highways Councillor Will Windsor-Clive (C, Newent) said: "I am sure that any short-term disruption to local residents and road users will be outweighed by the improvements to Hewlett Road."
The road has several shops, a lettings agency, a pub and the constituency office of Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood.
Councillor Klara Sudbury (LD, All Saints) said she hoped the works would benefit the community, adding it was "very welcome".
