Big changes for the Gloucestershire Portal

This site has grown so large it is now unmanageable, so next week we will be moving all our static pages to a CMS that will allow us to update and add content more regularly and much more quickly.

The forums and Directory will be staying the same ( apart from some exciting updates to come ).

I'll post more details early next week.

Because of pressure of work we have not been able to give the boards the time we would really like, but the office move and the server migrations are now behind us, so watch out for lots of new features.

A quick reminder to our members that all of you have not only the ability to post here but every member has their own photo gallery that can be public or private, and every member also has a free blog here that operates in a very similar way to the boards. Do ask if you need any help there.

Also dont forget that once you have set the connection in your profile you can click the twitter, facebook and google + button on any post picture or blog and that will send a link to your member page there.

Spam Bots

We have always been a target for spam bots, but this last month we have had thousands. This is why we have a double registration check for new members. I know it is a nuisance, but it keeps the boards safe.

First I'd like to apologise for the lack of content from me lately. This has been due to work commitments, and for the last 10 days or so I really have been extremely ill, but today I feel almost human again.

The boards have had a number of upgrades lately and there are new features that I'll go into in a moment.

I'd like you all to welcome Gloucester_Lad who has volunteered to be the moderator of the Tuffley forum. We do need new blood and moderators are always welcomed, so if you would like to moderate the forum of your own area then please let me know. I'm sure you all know we lost a major contributor when John Tocknel died this year.

New Features

The facebook and twitter share features have been improved. Once you have set up the connect properly in your profile you can send any post, image or blog to twitter and to your facebook wall. In addition at the bottom of every post you will see buttons to send the post to stumble upon, digit it and all the major sharing sites.

Blogs

very member can set up aq blog here, and now you will see that you have the same interface as for posting, so you can now add links, images etc to your blog posts.

Gallery

The gallery has also been improved. You can set up albums, images and of course the same sharing facilities to facebook and twitter are there as well.

At present we are running version 3.14 . Next week I'll be applying a patch for ie9 , but version 3.20 is going to be available soon and this version will concentrate even more on social media as well as some lovely new features.

~Coming soon are some great contests with prizes. The Tall ships contest will be running again this year with prizes from us here, The London Road Studio and Dammo photography

We have 28 new users sitting in the validation queue. When you register the system sends you an email with a link to confirm your application. If you register with a false email address then you won't be able to post.

The Gloucestershire Directory - The biggest and the best

Our Gloucestershire Directory contains 6992 local sites, so today or tomorrow we will hit 7000 . The 7000th submission will be upgrade to a premium listing free of charge.

I'm very proud that this is the best and most comprehensive Gloucesterhsire directory on the web.

You can have your status updated on facebook from these boards, or the other way around. You can also put your posts onto your facebook page.

To enable these features, first click on your icon that you should asee at th top of the boards and select "My Profile", then click edit my orofile. Click on the images to enlarge them

Next click on the facebook connect

If you see the blue button, click on it. You will then see these options

Now choose the options you want.

Twitter integration will be enabled later this week

We are now running on the new servers, and these boards have just been upgraded to 3.04 .

Our Directory software will be upgraded next week and we are then ready to expand the site.

Plans include more video clips ( you may have noticed we have an embedded clip on our Home Page ), images and small video clips on our directory, and we are also planning a proper classifieds section.

As always Id be grateful for feedback, so please let me know what you think, and also let me have any ideas you may have for what you would like to see on the site

New Servers

Regulars will know that we have regularly updated our servers over the years, but traffic and user equirements dont stand still, so at the end of Septmber we will be replacing all our hardware with brand new servers.

Web addresses wont change of course. More info will follow when we have the dates finalised.

Services upgrade

The latest version of these boards is now available, but our current version of mysql and php need to be upgraded before we can install them.

At 5 pm today we will be ugrading php and mysql. This should only require a few minutes of downtime.

Once we are sure that all sites are running normally we will install the new boards.

Next week we will upgrade Plesk to the latest version.

Visitors double

Gloucestershire Directory Update

The reorganisation is nearly complete, and all the new scripts will be live by the end of the month. We have been saying for some time that we list nearly 6000 local sites, but that will soon be over 7000. As of today we have 6994 sites, all listed by town.

Obviously I'm biased here, but I really do believe that this is the best resource on the web for finding Gloucestershire based sites. There are many pretenders out there, but not one of them have anything like the number of sites that we do.

I'll announce again when all the new scripts are live. They will include improved search, thumbnails of sites and photos.

As always if you have any ideas or suggestions then do let me know

First a big thank you to all those who have emailed. Feedback is always apreciated and your suggestions are especially welcome.

We have created folders for all the major towns in the area and will continue over the next week to add more of the small villages. We still have many sites to be moved, but I beleive it wil be worth the work in the end.
