As many of you know I lived with my Gran, Mother and Sister in Chalford from the very early age of about 6 months until I got married and then lived in Ebley.

Most of my family on my Grans side were from Wales and sometimes we went to stay with relatives there.
My favourite person was Uncle Gordon who was my Grans first cousin. He lived in Kinnerton,...

Back in the late 40's and early 50's I was Captain of Gloucester Albion Hockey Team. I wonder if anyone remembers me (I went by Shirley Sylvester in those days). My Dad played for the Gloucester Gas Company Hockey Team and several times I was called on to fill in for someone who couldn't make it. We were a mixed team and had girls from...

Chalford, if you don’t already know, is a small village consisting of lots of little lanes leading up from the “main road” to the houses above.

Where I lived you had to go up several narrow lanes until you reached our house. There were two ways you could reach it from the road, one was a bit quicker than the other way but you could use either.
If you went...

I have a bit of a reputation for killing Vacuum Cleaners and Lawn Mowers.

I must have broken about a dozen Vacuum Cleaners and maybe about 6 mowers over the last 20 years or so.

I used to buy Dyson cleaners as they picked up virtually everything including all the dog hairs but the dam things used to conk out just after the guarantee expired.
When the...

We only had a couple of local shops which supplied small amounts of groceries, a Butchers, and a Post Office. Anything else and we had to go by bus into Stroud and then carry the shopping a long way back to our house. We didn’t have the donkeys, as they...

I can remember Alexandra’s, where we bought Tinker from, a small Post Office, another shop along London Road called Sollar’s which was quite a walk from where we lived and we only went there when we had to and a wonderful shop called Carpenter’s.
Carpenter’s was located in the High Street, if you can call it a...

Chalford is a small village, 4 miles from Stroud with just one main road running through the village and is known as “Little Switzerland” because it is so hilly. There were lots of fields to play in, streams to paddle in and woods to explore so life as a youngster was idyllic, almost like something out of one of the “Enid Blyton’s books.
