The killer of Vacuum Cleaners

Posted by Vanda , 17 June 2011 · 159 views

I have a bit of a reputation for killing Vacuum Cleaners and Lawn Mowers.

I must have broken about a dozen Vacuum Cleaners and maybe about 6 mowers over the last 20 years or so.

I used to buy Dyson cleaners as they picked up virtually everything including all the dog hairs but the dam things used to conk out just after the guarantee expired.

When the last Dyson blew up we were shopping in Tesco when we came across an upright Vacuum for less than £50.00, it was half price at the time. “That will do, if it lasts a couple of years then you’ve more than had your monies worth” Eddie, my husband said.

This Vacuum worked fine and was a lot lighter than the last Dyson. We got on well and after 4 years it was still going strong apart from a plastic clip which broke.

This clip was important as if you used the “hose” part the dust used to come back out of the Vacuum. I did tie some cardboard onto a piece of string and would shove this under the clip to keep the vacuum upright so I could use the hose to do the stairs.

It was a bit of a nuisance but as the hose was not used every day, I put up with it.

One particularly hot day after a while of huffing and puffing and getting into a bit of a strop trying to get the cardboard to fit I decided enough was enough and it was time to get a new one.

This called for another trip to Tesco, this was a feat in itself as the husband does not like shopping and I can’t drive, the same vacuum was now £80.00 so we decided to leave it.

Having no patience I thought about e-bay. Having done a bit of research beforehand I found the vacuum I wanted and searched on ebay for one. This one was a cylinder type not an upright as I have always had before.

I have bought several things on ebay before and have always been pleased with my purchases and so the bidding began. I left it until about there were 10 seconds to go and put my bid in. “Hooray” – I won it, paid for it and waited the couple of days for delivery. Including the postage it cost me £33.00 so it was a bargain. Even came with 12 months guarantee.

Well a couple of days later the vacuum arrived. I opened up the box, got the vacuum out and plugged it in.

What I have forgotten to tell you is that I have a 12 ½ year old very hairy collie dog.

When she was a pup we had a carpet sweeper and she used to attach herself to the brushes on either side of it and I would try desperately to clean the carpet with her trying her best to eat it. There I would be trying to propel it over the carpet and there Pixel would be attached to it, biting and many a time I would run the dam dog over.

It was a loosing battle so the carpet sweeper was confined to the back of the cupboard.

She was not too bad with the upright one apart from when you used the hose and she would grab the end of it and bark like mad.

Well, the new vacuum cleaner was plugged in and we were raring to go.

I attached the “Turbo tool” designed specially for homes with pets, pressed the on button and we were “all systems go”. Apart from, that is, Pixel.

She had great fun barking and biting the turbo tool. After about 5 minutes of this I could stand it no longer, turned if off, pressed the rewind button for the cord to shoot back into body of the hoover, nearly taking the dog’s eye out in the process with the plug and put it back in the cupboard.

What do you use now I hear you asking – well for doing the general everyday hovering of downstairs I use the old vacuum and for upstairs the new one. It’s just a good job that I didn’t chuck the old one away!

Maybe I should have bought an upright one instead. :dontgetit:
