Why am I so accident prone?

Posted by Vanda , 22 February 2012 - * * * * - · 106 views

Since I was a small child I have always been clumsy and accident prone.

My first accident, which I still have the scars from, was when I was only about 9 months old. My Gran had placed an iron which she had been using in the corner behind the chair. A couple of hours later along I crawled and somehow managed to push the iron over onto my hand. ...

Visiting Uncle Gordon in Kinnerton

Posted by Vanda , 25 January 2012 - - - - - - · 91 views

As many of you know I lived with my Gran, Mother and Sister in Chalford from the very early age of about 6 months until I got married and then lived in Ebley.

Most of my family on my Grans side were from Wales and sometimes we went to stay with relatives there.

My favourite person was Uncle Gordon who was my Grans first cousin. He lived in Kinnerton,...

Our Lane

Posted by Vanda , 24 June 2011 - * * * * * · 105 views

Chalford, if you don’t already know, is a small village consisting of lots of little lanes leading up from the “main road” to the houses above.

Where I lived you had to go up several narrow lanes until you reached our house. There were two ways you could reach it from the road, one was a bit quicker than the other way but you could use either.

If you went...

The killer of Vacuum Cleaners

Posted by Vanda , 17 June 2011 - - - - - - · 159 views

I have a bit of a reputation for killing Vacuum Cleaners and Lawn Mowers.

I must have broken about a dozen Vacuum Cleaners and maybe about 6 mowers over the last 20 years or so.

I used to buy Dyson cleaners as they picked up virtually everything including all the dog hairs but the dam things used to conk out just after the guarantee expired.

When the...

Bike rides and Ice Cream

Posted by Vanda , 05 May 2011 - - - - - - · 127 views

When I was growing up in Chalford in the 1960’s we had no transport so had to rely on Buses and bikes.

We only had a couple of local shops which supplied small amounts of groceries, a Butchers, and a Post Office. Anything else and we had to go by bus into Stroud and then carry the shopping a long way back to our house. We didn’t have the donkeys, as they...

When I was small

Posted by Vanda , 18 February 2011 - - - - - - · 99 views

We did not have many shops in Chalford.

I can remember Alexandra’s, where we bought Tinker from, a small Post Office, another shop along London Road called Sollar’s which was quite a walk from where we lived and we only went there when we had to and a wonderful shop called Carpenter’s.

Carpenter’s was located in the High Street, if you can call it a...

wooding

Posted by Vanda , 19 November 2010 - * * * * * · 143 views

Back in the 1960’s there were no Garden Centres and as we lived in a Chalford there were lots of woods where we could get bean sticks and the like from.

We had a large garden of about and acre which consisted of steep terraces and a large vegetable garden at the back of the house which backed onto the road leading up to Chalford Hill.

We also kept...

Confessions of a Stroud Housewife and Mother

Posted by Vanda , 05 November 2010 - * * * * * · 198 views

Although I have lots more stories to tell of my childhood, which I will go back to at later date, I would like to fast forward to the early 1980’s when I was married with 2 small boys.

I lived at the time in Ebley, near Stroud, with my two boys who we shall call Tom and Dick and husband Harry. I shall not use their real names in case of...

Tinker

Chalford is a small village, 4 miles from Stroud with just one main road running through the village and is known as “Little Switzerland” because it is so hilly. There were lots of fields to play in, streams to paddle in and woods to explore so life as a youngster was idyllic, almost like something out of one of the “Enid Blyton’s books.

Like most kids we...

Jack the pet jackdaw

Posted by Vanda , 07 June 2010 - * * * * * · 177 views

My Mum, older Sister and myself went to live with my Gran and Granddad in Chalford when I was about 18 months old. My Gran was brought up on various farms and loved animals and one of the earliest memories I have is about our pet Jackdaw called “Jack”.

My Gran found Jack one day as a small fledgling which could not fly. She nursed him back to health and...
